Numb Brings Frosty Hotness to Harrah’s

The newest outpost of the beguilingly beatific (thanks, marketing phrase generator!) Numb bar has come to Harrah’s Las Vegas.

No, seriously, it truly is beguiling. The signature cocktails (not to mention the beatific bartenders) will win you over at Harrah’s just as they have the legions of die-hard fans of Numb at Caesars Palace.

Numb at Harrah's Las Vegas

Vegas bartenders are known for their flair. In Munah's case, her flair is her smile! And we're not just kissing up to get another free sample.

Drop by sometime. Just make sure you take the necessary precautions to avoid brain freeze!

Today’s Featured Dealertainer

One of the coolest part of being a dealertainer (they perform, the “entertain” part, and deal blackjack) at Imperial Palace is that you get to play Halloween dress-up all year long!

Today’s featured dealertainer is Jerod who takes on a rock star vibe as Poison frontman Bret Michaels.

Bret Michaels dealertainer

Unlike many dealers in Vegas, Jerod could actually bench press us.

Stop by and get an autograph sometime, as well as advice about whether you should “always split 8s” at the blackjack table. Find out more about the famed dealertainers of Imperial Palace.

Vegas Scavenger Hunt Ups the Halloween Free Factor

This blog is a huge fan of “free,” and of Las Vegas, so we were borderline euphoric to hear about a Vegas-centric scavenger hunt set for Halloween weekend, Oct. 29-31.

This scavenger hunt is going to be stuffed with so much awesome, there’s even a slick video promoting it.

Just for having a blast around town on Halloween weekend, smart phone users can earn perks like free hooch, free tickets to see Penn & Teller at Rio and a $100 dining credit at Serendipity 3 at Caesars Palace.

The grand prize is a two-night stay at a bigtime Las Vegas hotel, Planet Hollywood. (Unofficial motto we just made up: “Our Pleasure Pit is 212% better than those other sucky, so-called Pleasure Pits around town.”)

Planet Hollywood Pleasure Pit

Confirmation this Las Vegas blog has, in fact, photographed everything in Las Vegas.

It’s free to participate, and all you need to do is get the SCVNGR app for iPhone or Android. Once it’s installed, look for “Treks,” and find “Pulse of Vegas Halloween.” Visit the official SCVNGR site.

This Halloween scavenger adventure involves four hotspots sure to be hopping on Halloween weekend, with challenges at each (active on specific dates): Carnaval Court at Harrah’s Las Vegas (Oct. 29-31), Serendipity 3 at Caesars Palace (Oct. 29 only), Heart Bar at Planet Hollywood (Oct. 29-30), VooDoo Lounge at Rio (Oct. 29-31).

Serendipity 3

Serious scavenger hunt hint for Serendipity 3.

For each successful challenge, things like taking a photo or sending a text message, participants earn points. Eight points (easy) earns a free cocktail, and so on. The top point-getter gets a Planet Hollywood hotel getaway. Again, free, free, free. It’s even better when you repeat it.

Don’t forget to check out our list of Vegas-Inspired Halloween costumes and our collection of sassy Holly Madison Halloween costumes.

Good luck, and stay out of trouble. Oh, wait, that’s pretty much the point of doing Vegas for Halloween in the first place, right?

Today’s “So, You Think You Know Vegas?” Puzzler

OK, Vegas fanatics, here’s a toughie. Where on the Las Vegas Strip is this?

bras

You get, uh, two guesses.

Need a hint? Yes, we’ve seen bras-as-art elsewhere in Vegas, but these impressive specimens adorn the bar area of a mid-Strip restaurant known for its comfort food and free, live entertainment. Post your guess in the Comments section.

Our Gratuitous “Halloween in Vegas” Thingy

Oh, yeah, Halloween’s the (black) cat’s meow in Vegas. There are parties galore, costume contest throw-downs, haunted houses, celeb-hosted nightclub soirees and tons more.

Granted, we are a Las Vegas blog, but there’s no way we’re spending upwards of 146 hours gathering all the Halloween goodness, so feel free to check out other sites that have done just that. Among them, visit Las Vegas Advisor, Las Vegas Weekly, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Vegas.com blog for all the gory details.

Las Vegas Halloween costume

Just get into the Halloween spirit, already!

We can, however, sling some Sin City Halloween highlights your way, relatively free of further Halloween puns, thank you very much.

Several of the Las Vegas hotels in the Harrah’s Entertainment family are having bigtime Halloween events. Get more details here.

Here are some highlights:

Def Jam hosts the “Ncredible (sic) Halloween Party,” hosted by Nick Cannon, at VooDoo Lounge, atop the Rio, on Oct. 30. Get the details.

VooDoo Lounge stays in the mix with its “Carnal Carnival” Halloween party, Oct. 31. Circus sideshow acts, a celebrity host and a DJ will be on tap as the club with arguably the best view in, oh, the world will be transformed into a “double-decker outdoor nightclub.”

The Chippendales, also at Rio, are hosting a “Chippendales Halloween Hotties” costume contest. Find out more on their Facebook page.

Chippendales

Gratuitous Chippendales photo!

McFadden’s inside Rio hosts a three-day celebration of Halloween, Oct. 28-30, with the main event on Oct. 30, named, wait for it, “Boos and Booze.”

Vince Neil Ink at Rio Las Vegas at O’Sheas are offering up specials for Halloween weekend, Oct. 29-31. Tattoos start for as little as $80.

Vince Neil Ink tattoo

"Aargh" you ready for a Halloween tattoo? Hey, we didn't say this post would be pun-free. Chill.

Color Salon at Caesars Palace is doing body painting for Halloween party-goers. Here’s a nice write-up, with some samples of the work and make-up effects being offered.

Halloween body painting

Question: When you're undressing someone wearing body paint, doesn't the turpentine sting?

Serendipity 3 puts on “Unparties” on Oct. 29-30, with the requisite costume contests, plus food that will make your mouth write you a large check because it’s so awesome. Find out more.

PBR Rock Bar & Grill, inside Planet Hollywood, hosts its first-ever costume contest (three, actually), each night Oct. 29 through 31, with serious cash prizes. “Like” them on Facebook to catch all the latest news and events.

The Heart Bar at Planet Hollywood has a “Sexy Costume Contest” on Oct. 30. Sexy costume contest? Is there any other kind in Vegas? Just ask Planet Hollywood’s resident costume expert, Holly Madison.

Holly Madison costume

Gratuitous Holly Madison costume! Hey, fair's fair.

Carnaval Court outside Harrah’s Las Vegas will be the place to be seen (although not heard, fair warning, it gets boisterous) at its “Fear and Clothing in Las Vegas” Halloween Party, Oct. 29-31. Live entertainment will keep things lively, and there will be tons of Captain Morgan swag. This blog has a soft spot in its heart for Captain Morgan, so we’re thinking this one’s a must-attend event.

Other Halloween happenings? Many consider Fright Dome at Circus Circus an essential component of any Vegas Halloween. In fact, we hear AOL recently ranked Fright Dome one of “America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions.” Go to the official site.

Zombie Vegas dealer

Gratuitous zombie casino dealer photo! Yes, that's the person who writes this very blog. (Now you know.)

The beyond-decadent Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball at the Hard Rock happens Oct. 30 at 10:00. This event was named “One of the Five Events to Attend Before You Die” by Maxim Magazine.

The Las Vegas Halloween Parade is getting some buzz, and happens downtown on Oct. 31. The participant line-up is at 6:00 p.m., on Hoover and 4th Street, then the parade starts at 7:00 p.m., north along 4th Street to Ogden street.

Heidi Montag at Pure

Oh, and Heidi Montag hosts at Pure Nightclub on Oct. 30. Our brains are officially full now.

It’s time to don your costumes and have a blast on Halloween in Vegas. It’s no coincidence Vegas is rated among the “Top 10 Cities for Trick-or-Treating.” Find out more.

If you haven’t landed on a costume yet, don’t freak out. Get some inspiration from our 20 Vegas-Inspired Halloween Costumes.

Las Vegas Named Dumbest City in U.S.

The Daily Beast Web site has named Las Vegas the dumbest major city in the U.S.

We’re not really sure what they mean by that.

Today’s Random Vegas Photographic Gloriousness

We just came up with a new motto for The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace: “Don’t Blame Us If Your Eyeballs Explode!”

Seriously, we’ve visited this shopping mecca any number of times, and our pulse still kind of races when we view its eye-popping splendor. Here’s a photo we grabbed a night or two ago.

Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

Wide angle lens, you just got owned.

Assuming your eyes didn’t just explode, try this on for size. Click here to see a larger version, suitable for use as a desktop image. (When viewing the photo, just right click with your mouse, then select “Set as Desktop Background”).

Don’t say this Las Vegas blog never gave you anything.

The Forum Shops are a must-see, must-shop destination in Sin City. And don’t worry, we’re pretty sure nobody’s eyeballs have actually exploded. Recently.

Downtown Las Vegas Gets a High-Flying Zipline

Thrill-seekers are drooling over a new zipline attraction under the light-studded canopy of the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas.

The massive zipline scaffolding is an impressive feat of engineering, and somewhat daunting for those of us who like to remain a bit more, well, grounded. We snagged some video during a visit a night or two ago, and thought we’d share.

The new feature seems to be getting some great reviews. In the video, you can distinctly hear a Fremont Street Experience reveler say, “That’s awesome.” His companion replies, “Dude, is that not awesome?” What more do you need to know?

The zipline runs 800 feet down the length of “Glitter Gulch,” close to 70 feet above the hard, hard, unforgiving ground. Riders can enjoy a “controlled plummet” of close to 25 miles per hour, and can adjust their velocity based on body position.

The zipline attraction is priced at $20 ($15 to ride again) after 6:00 p.m. and $15 ($10 for a re-ride) during the day.

The company hosting the zipline ride, Greenheart, is looking to make the attraction a permanent part of the Fremont Street Experience, and hopes to double the length of the line.

Learn more about this ridiculously foolhardy downtown diversion.

Line up, adrenaline junkies! There are always new things to do in Las Vegas.

11 Mistakes Every Las Vegas Visitor Makes

Nobody’s perfect, so we thought it might be useful to compile a list of blunders every visitor to Las Vegas makes. OK, maybe not “every.” But a headline like, “11 Mistakes Several People Have Made When Visiting Las Vegas” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Either way, here are some goofs you might avoid the next time you’re in Sin City.

1. Misjudging Distances

This has been deemed the top mistake Vegas visitors make. It’s an interesting phenomenon, but everything on the Strip seems closer than it really is. Maybe because everything on the Strip is on a grander scale, so it just seems close. In any event, before you begin that “five minute stroll” from Harrah’s to Planet Hollywood, you might want to re-think those footwear choices.

Caesars Palace

Vegas resorts like Caesars Palace may be (much) farther away than they appear.

2. Not Using Birth Control

Seriously. Vegas still exists in the real world. Be spontaneous, but make sure everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

3. Booking a Room Too Late in the Game

It’s a cold, hard fact of a supply-and-demand economy that when demand goes up, so do prices. The earlier you can finalize your Vegas plans, the better. Book ahead and you can save big. Example: At the moment, several resorts are offering tiered discounts based on how far ahead you book your stay. Learn more. By the way, this item was voted this blog’s “Most Self-Serving Visitor Mistake,” by, uh, this blog. You’ll live.

4. Not Learning the Games You’re Playing

Sure, there are fortunes to be won in Vegas, often based on Lady Luck alone. But there are plenty of games where the odds get a whole lot better if you understand the game you’re playing, the proper pay-outs and the smartest strategies. Example: The big, red 6 and 8 in craps. They’re big and red, and close to you, for a reason. A bet on the big 6 and 8 always pays even money (for $5, you get $5 if you win), but a $6 bet placed directly on the 6 or 8 (near where the dealer stands) pays $7. There are tons of resources online, so take advantage.

Craps

If you're unsure which bets make the most sense, ask your dealer. They're rooting for you. Yes, they work for "The Man," but get more tips if you do well.

5. Thinking Prostitution is Legal in Vegas

Sure, just about anything goes in Vegas, but one misconception rules them all: That prostitution is legal in Sin City. Oops, wrong. Prostitution isn’t legal in Clark County (in which Las Vegas resides). Legal brothels do exist in Nevada, but we are a Las Vegas blog, not a prostitution facilitator, so you’re on your own.

6. Blowing Your Allowance

Vegas is, without a doubt, the most thrilling city in the world. You get to town, and you’re ready to live it up. Good for you! However (you knew there would be a however), how much fun will you be having if you spend your whole Vegas budget your first night in town? It happens. It’s best to figure out your allowance (or daily loss-limit) before you ever arrive, and stick to it. Sometimes, this blog carries its daily allowance in cash and leaves the ATM card back in the room. Just a little insurance.

money

Pace yourself! You'll thank us later.

7. Not Signing Up for Casino Loyalty Programs

Do you want the most bang for your Vegas buck, or what? If so, always, always make sure to sign up for your favorite casino’s player loyalty program. Use your card whenever you play, and reap the perks you deserve. Some programs, like Total Rewards (sometimes referred to as “Harrah’s Rewards”), the players club of Harrah’s Entertainment, even let you accumulate credits based upon money you spend on dining and other non-gambling diversions. Get everything that’s coming to you.

8. Taking Those Porn Flyers, Then Littering

You know the ones. If you’re not going to keep them, don’t take them. The resulting litter is an eyesore.

9. Not Bookmarking This Blog

Same goes for not “Liking” us on Facebook or following us on Twitter. OK, upon reflection, this was the most self-serving item on the list. So sue us.

10. Not Staying Hydrated

Las Vegas, while amply air-conditioned, is in the middle of a desert. Experts say that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated (about 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated already, according to some sources). Now, because people often drink in Vegas, they figure they’ve got the hydration thing covered. Sorry! Alcohol is a diuretic, causing your body to lose more water than you take in. Oh, and dehydration is also one of the leading causes of hangover symptoms, so just drink more water, already.

beer

Sorry! Doesn't count as hydration.

11. Not Venturing Off the Strip

There are so many things to do on the Las Vegas Strip, it’s tempting to never leave your favorite Las Vegas hotel. But the Strip is just one part of the Vegas experience. There’s a grittier Vegas downtown, and of course, all the natural wonders around Las Vegas, including Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead and even the Grand Canyon. So, do your homework (thanks, Interwebs), and change things up a bit for your next visit. Which is easy for us to say, given that this blog rarely leaves the craps table once we get settled in. Then again, we’re not a Vegas visitor. So there.

Red Rock Canyon

The scenic drive through Red Rock Canyon is not as lovely as our photo, but it's close.

So, that’s our list. Do you have other Las Vegas mistakes you’d like to share? (And don’t say “Our second child!” Refer to #2 again.)

Post your Vegas mishaps in the Commments section. And keep it PG-13, please.

Diddy Drops Some Ditties at Pure Nightclub

Rap impresario (translation: really rich) Diddy hosted a Vegas Strip blow-out at Pure Nightclub inside Caesars Palace on Oct. 23.

Diddy at Pure Nightclub

We're pretty sure that's a health drink, complete with ginko biloba.

Diddy was in town for the Justin Timberlake and Friends concert, a star-fueled benefit concert for the Shiner’s Hospital for Children.

Cassie and Greg: Two of the Coolest People We Know

How cool are Vegas fans Cassie and Greg? Here’s how cool. They invited this Las Vegas blog to their upcoming wedding at Flamingo Las Vegas!

Cassie and Greg

Cassie and Greg show the rest of us how to rock some sunglasses.

Hell, yes, we’ll be there. And not just because weddings often involve liquor and bridesmaids.

Aside from the ceremony at the Flamingo Wedding Chapel, Cassie and Greg have a full Sin City schedule planned, including a post-nuptials dinner at the Paradise Garden Buffet (a hugely popular spot for Vegas wedding dinners) and dancing (etcetera) at Bally’s.

Thanks for the invitation, you guys!

Forget Malibu Barbie! Try Vegas Holly. Here, then, are 20 of Holly Madison’s looks to get your creative juices flowing. Which sounds far more wrong than it’s intended to be, probably.

Nathan Burton, Frank Mir Go “Over the Edge”

Magician and Flamingo headliner Nathan Burton has finally gone over the edge, and he’s not the only one!

Nathan Burton and other VIPs rappelled off the top of Rio Las Vegas as part of an “Over the Edge” fundraiser that raised more than $100,000 for the Special Olympics, Oct. 7 and 8.

Nathan Burton

Nathan Burton puts his life in the hands of Dave, the event's Staging Manager (translation: Plummeting Avoidance Expert).

The Special Olympics is a free sports training and competition program for folks with developmental disabilities.

Asked why he was participating, Nathan Burton said, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We’re in Las Vegas. Going off the top of the Rio. And, guess what, we’re raising money for the Special Olympics!” He added, “I’d bet Donny Osmond will be out here next year.” Consider the gauntlet thrown, Mr. Osmond.

Nathan Burton

Nathan Burton, meet the edge. Edge, meet Nathan Burton.

Burton added, “The toughest part is getting over the edge, and you’re hanging at a 90-degree angle off the side of the building, and you have to believe in the rope, and you have to believe in the people that are hooking you up. You just have to let go. There’s no turning back.”

Nathan Burton

Nerves of steel!

Burton’s mother was in attendance for moral support. She said, “When Nathan was a boy, we had a three story Colonial house. Whenever we couldn’t find him, he’d be up on the roof.”

Here’s a great video of a local journalist taking the leap.

Former UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir also took the plunge for a great cause.

UFC Frank Mir

Though a very nice person, Frank Mir could hand us our spleen while it's still beating. Or something.

He’s been quoted as saying he was more apprehensive going over the edge at the Rio than he’s been going into the octagon. No kidding! It’s dizzying, and we didn’t even rappel anywhere!

Frank Mir

Bruiser Frank Mir gets horizontal.

Learn more about the Special Olympics.

Rio

Steve Thayer, V.P. of Hotel Operations at Rio, takes his turn defying gravity. Aieee!

Check out our exclusive photo gallery. Yes, this blog risked life and limb for you. You can thank us with cupcakes.

Today’s Las Vegas Wedding Mojo Factoid

Oct. 10, 2010 was a big day for Las Vegas wedding chapels. People looking for some numerological mojo couldn’t resist tying the knot since 10/10/10 is said to be exceptionally lucky. (No laughing! Like you don’t have superstitions you follow, especially in Vegas casinos.)

How big was 10/10/10? The chapel at Flamingo Las Vegas hosted 78 wedding ceremonies. In. One. Day.

Flamingo Vegas wedding chapel

"Run, run while you still can!" Which, as you might suspect, is not an approved slogan of the Flamingo Wedding Chapel.

Find out more about the Flamingo Wedding Chapel and weddings in Las Vegas.

And read our probing interview with Kris, manager of the Flamingo Wedding Chapel.
