Today’s Las Vegas Mystery: Michelangelo’s David

You know that replica of Michelangelo’s David in the Appian Way Shops at Caesars Palace?

Yes, that Michelangelo's David in the Appian Way Shops at Caesars Palace.

The dude has really big feet.

Huge.

We’re just saying.

Celebrated Chefs Kick Off Vegas Uncork’d

Some of the culinary world’s most acclaimed chefs served up a bubbly photo op at Caesars Palace on May 10, 2012 to launch Vegas Uncork’d, an annual food and wine event in Sin City.

Could somebody whip us up a sammich? Thanks.

Chef Wolfgang Puck did the honors for the traditional “saber-off” (uncorking a symbolic bottle of champagne with, you know, a saber) at the famous fountains in front of Caesars Palace.

Vegas Uncork'd

It's all fun and games until a famous chef puts an eye out.

Many credit Wolfgang Puck with starting the fine dining restaurant revolution in Las Vegas, one which had led to Vegas becoming a mecca for celebrity chefs from around the world.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Puck’s Spago restaurant at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

Vegas Uncork'd

This blog credits Wolfgang Puck with "letting us get all up in his grill for a close-up."

Vegas Uncork’d was first held in 2007, bringing together culinary superstars for a “celebration of wine, food and spirits.”

Visit the official Vegas Uncork’d site for all the details.

Bobby Flay Vegas Uncork'd

Chef Bobby Flay currently has 124 shows on the Food Network. Roughly.

The launch event included appearances by so many big-time chefs, it was difficult to keep track of them all.

They included Bobby Flay (Mesa Grill at Caesars), Hubert Keller (Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay), “Nobu” Matsuhisa (below, Nobu Las Vegas) and Rick Moonen (RM Seafood, Mandalay Bay).

Nobu at Vegas Uncork'd

Chef "Nobu" Matsuhisa is about to get his own hotel and restaurant within Caesars Palace. It's complicated.

Because there were too many great chefs to fit into once sentence, here are more: Francois Payard (Payard Patisserie & Bistro at Caesars), Jean Joho (Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Vegas), Michel Richard (Central at Caesars Palace), Guy Savoy (Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars), Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Prime Steakhouse, Bellagio), Bradley Ogden (Bradley Ogden at Caesars) and many others.

Vegas Uncork'd

French invasion in Vegas: Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Michel Richard, Jean Joho and Guy Savoy.

Vegas Uncork’d is presented by Bon Appetit magazine and the event is sponsored by the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace and the Cosmo.

Vegas Uncork'd

Wolfgang Puck's lucky there were no cameras present to record this mishap.

All-in-all, Vegas Uncork’d will feature about 50 world-class chefs, 60 restaurants and 30 events (through May 13). Don’t miss this rare opportunity to rub elbows with a pantheon of culinary greats. Only in Vegas, baby!

Here’s a virtual sample platter of exclusive photos from the Vegas Uncork’d kick-off event at Caesars Palace.

Old Homestead Serves Up the Perfect Vegas Meal

There are a lot of restaurants in Las Vegas. Sometimes, if you’re coming for a short visit, it can almost feel like too many. Well, this blog is going to make it easy for you, because we have discovered what we can confidently say is the perfect Las Vegas meal, courtesy of Old Homestead Steakhouse at Caesars Palace.

So, here’s our breakdown, course by course, of what was perhaps our best meal in Vegas, ever. First course, a cocktail. Yes, “course.” This is a Las Vegas blog.

Old Homestead Steakhouse Lemon Drop

Many great culinary journeys have begun with the imbibing of a Lemon Drop Martini.

Of course, one does not live by liquid alone, so it’s time for some old-school steakhouse bread.

Old Homestead Steakhouse bread

It's all delicious, but trust us, you'll want to pace yourself.

Next up, appetizers. There’s a wide selection, including Oysters Rockefeller, Maine Lobster Bisque, Steak Tartare, Calamari, Thick Cut Applewood Smoked Bacon. They all sounded good, but we got the Kobe Meatball ($20) and were so glad we did.

Old Homestead Steakhouse Kobe Meatball

The mind boggles. We're definitely boggled.

There’s an argument to be made that the bowling ball-sized Kobe Meatball is a meal unto itself, but what fun would that be? Suffice to say, this may very well be the best meatball in the contiguous United States.

The next course in our perfect Vegas meal: The Kitchen Sink Salad ($18). It’s a masterful mishmash of shrimp, salami, bacon, avocado, tomato, hearts of palm, blue cheese and champagne vinaigrette.

Old Homestead House Kitchen Sink Salad

No actual sinks were used in the preparation of this great salad.

Granted, at this stage of the perfect dinner, you’re already feeling your maximum capacity approaching. Remember, this is Las Vegas. Go big or go home.

Time for the succulent centerpiece of the meal, the Petite Filet Mignon ($52). Seasoned and prepared to perfection, there’s a chance the steaks at Old Homestead will alter the course of your life forever.

Old Homestead Steakhouse filet mignon

Granted, this might not be the perfect vegetarian meal. But that doesn't make it any less perfect.

There’s a long story behind the meat served at Old Homestead Steakhouse. Something about it being dry-aged at least 30 days, and how it comes from a specialty butcher on the East Coast, but honestly, we weren’t paying all that much attention because we were busy having a religious experience involving our side dish, the Potato Gnocchi with Truffle Butter ($13).

Old Homestead Steakhouse gnocchi

Hand-rolled, every day. Our mouth has already sent us flowers and four thank-you notes.

Again, the mouth-watering gnocchi side could be the perfect Vegas meal all on its own, but there’s no stopping now. It’s time for dessert. Which we probably should have pluralized. The first dessert we tried, the creme brulee ($13) was great.

Old Homestead Steakhouse creme brulee

You're awesome, creme brulee, but you're about to get upstaged. Sorry.

Our perfect Vegas meal, however, features another offering: The Cast Iron Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie ($13), with house-made vanilla bean ice cream and whipped cream. If you can look at this and not drool, there’s a chance you’re a cyborg.

Old Homestead Steakhouse cast iron baked cookie

We're looking into whether marriage between blogs and desserts is legal in the state of Nevada.

Guaranteed: You’ll fantasize about this dessert long after you leave Old Homestead Steakhouse.

No perfect meal, of course, would be complete without incredible service. In the case of our visit, that was provided by the charming, knowledgeable (and patient) Charles.

Old Homestead Steakhouse waiter

Charles: Perfection purveyance, personified.

There you have it.

If you can only have one meal in Las Vegas, this should be it. And trust us, if you ever have this one, you may feel like it’s the only meal you’ll ever have room for. Simply spectacular.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo

There’s so much to see at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, you may even forget there are stores.

Caesars Palace The Forum Shops Fountain of the Gods

Our photos are so awesome, we're thinking of blogging for a living.

Seriously, there are stores. (More than 160 of them.) Please buy something so they can build more incredible things for this blog to photograph.

Thank you.

Caesars Palace Concierge Wins Bigtime Honor

This blog is an alleged expert about all-things-Vegas, yet, inexplicably, we’d never heard of the “Les Clefs d’Or” honor until one was presented to Jas Vitale, a concierge at Caesars Palace.

Jas (pronounced “jazz”) Vitale was given the prestigious Les Clefs d’Or (French for “the keys of gold”) award after a rigorous series of tests and interviews confirming Vitale meets an elite standard of knowledge and service.

Jas Vitale concierge Caesars Palace

Jas makes things happen at Caesars Palace.

Les Clefs d’Or, by the way, is pronounced “lay clay door.” The Les Clefs d’Or designation is given by a concierge organization of the same name. Which we also didn’t know existed. This blog really needs to get out more.

We stopped by Caesars Palace to meet Vitale and to ask him about his favorite Vegas concierge hook-up of all time.

Vitale says, “Last year, I helped the Princess of Saudi Arabia. She was staying at another hotel at the time, but wanted to meet Celine Dion. She’d tried everything, and 35 minutes after I heard about it, she was all set with a meet-and-greet. I heard later the princess had tears in her eyes when they met. And I got to tell my six-year-old daughter I’d helped a real princess.”

Les Clefs d'Or

Les Clefs d'Or recipients are easy to spot by these sweet gold key pin thingys.

“For a concierge, ‘no’ is not an answer,” says Vitale. Just another reason to love Las Vegas (and Caesars Palace), baby!

In April, Caesars Palace hosted the 2012 Pan American Congress of Les Clefs d’Or which drew about 500 attendees from across the U.S. and around the world. Caesars Palace now has five Les Clefs d’Or concierges on its staff.

The Biggest Las Vegas Slot Machine Win Ever

You just never know when Lady Luck’s going to slip into something more comfortable and give up the goods.

She was in an especially generous mood on March 21, 2003. That was the day the largest Las Vegas slot machine jackpot ever was paid, on a Megabucks machine at Excalibur, for $39,713,982.25.

The 25-year-old who won, for a $100 investment, will get  a cool $1.5 million a year until he’s 50.

Dream Big

This blog actually does have dreams about slot machine jackpots sometimes. We should probably have that looked at.

Here’s another interesting Vegas slot jackpot story you may not have heard before.

In 1987, a Vegas visitor from Arkansas, Kirk Erickson, hit a jackpot for $1,061,812 on a “Million Dollar Baby” machine at Caesars Palace. Unfortunately, he was just 19 at the time, and because he was underage (the legal age to gamble in Las Vegas is 21), the jackpot was invalid. He sued, but the court ruled against him in 1989.

Cee Lo Green Announces Something We Don’t Recall

Cee Lo Green, singer of one of this blog’s favorite songs of all time, “F**k You” (but without the asterisks), took part in a news conference at Caesars Palace today (Apr. 27, 2012) where something was announced. Probably.

Cee Lo Green

Charisma, Cee Lo's got.

We think it had something to do with the Billboard Music Awards, but honestly, we were distracted by the “Jubilee!” showgirls from Bally’s Las Vegas.

Cee Lo Green showgirls

See? Not our fault.

We kind of remember a mention of the fact Cee Lo Green will perform at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards. The star-studded ceremony will take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 20, for broadcast on ABC.

Green kind of stole the show when he appeared in 2011.

During the whole news conference, we couldn’t seem to get “F**k You” out of our head. Which certainly doesn’t help, remembering-wise.

Cee Lo Green

We do have a vague memory of Green working the crowd a little.

We’re fairly sure Green mentioned something about his upcoming residency at Planet Hollywood. He must have said something about that.

Cee Lo Green showgirl

News conferences can be draining. They can also lead to serious HR violations.

We don’t recall him saying he’s on “The Voice,” but he is. He might have mentioned his gig at 1OAK (“One of a Kind”) nightclub at the Mirage (Apr. 27), but we don’t think so.

Again, we blame the showgirls.

Jubilee showgirl

Would you rather we have taken notes or this photograph? Exactly.

The former mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman, also kind of distracted us at the news conference, mainly because he was drinking a martini at 10:00 a.m. It’s kind of his thing.

Oscar Goodman

We love the guy. We can't help it.

Anyway, that’ll have to suffice for now.

Find out more about the Billboard Music Awards on the official site, and mark your calendar for Cee Lo Green’s stint at Planet Hollywood starting Aug. 29, 2012.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo: Trevi

Here’s today’s random photo of Las Vegas. Recognize this spot?

Forum Shops Trevi Restaurant statue

It's not a contest. The answer is below.

This shot was taken at the fountain next to Trevi restaurant in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

“Trevi,” by the way, means “three ways,” which seems oddly appropriate for Sin City, if you know what we’re saying. However, “Trevi” in this case refers to the fountain the restaurant was named after, which was built in Rome at the intersection of three streets.

The fountain outside Trevi restaurant isn’t a replica of the Trevi fountain, by the way. It’s the Fountain of the Gods. The Trevi fountain replica can be seen outside the Forum Shops on its east-facing, or Las Vegas Boulevard side (see below).

Trevi fountain Caesars Palace

If you can't find a statue to love at Caesars Palace, you've lost your marbles. Or, technically, marble.

What’s the best thing about Trevi restaurant according to this blog? The gelato stand right outside. Simply not optional during a Vegas visit. Trust us, your uvula will thank you. Or something.

“X Burlesque” Celebrates 10th Year on the Strip

The fetching cast of Flamingo’s X Burlesque show celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the saucy show in Las Vegas with a party at Pure inside Caesars Palace on April 24, 2012.

X Burlesque

This is how people in Las Vegas nightclubs look. Exactly like this. Every single one. All the time. We swear.

Thanks to Al Powers for the pic.

This anniversary marks the topless revue’s fifth year at Flamingo Las Vegas. It began its Vegas run at the Aladdin, now called Planet Hollywood.

When “X Burlesque” opened in 2002, it was called just “X.” Producers felt a clearer name was needed after several unfortunate incidents involving pirates looking for buried treasure. (We may have made that last part up.)

X Burlesque

Yes, we forced ourselves to see this show. For research purposes. The things we do for you.

Among the props used during the show’s fantasy sequences: Bathtubs, guitars, lollipops and feather boas. So, yeah, pretty much a typical night in Vegas.

X Burlesque

Just click on this photo to view the topless version. Really. That's totally possible. Just keep clicking. We'll wait.

Read more about the history of “X Burlesque” at the Las Vegas Sun, or if you’re like this Las Vegas blog, and not a fan of “reading,” just look at our exclusive photo gallery we’ve been dying to find an excuse to share again.

Today’s Vegas Thing We Wish We Had Our Mouth On

Oh, baby. Central restaurant at Caesars Palace may be known for its cuisine, but its signature cocktails are no slackers either.

Today’s temptation: The Bluberry Blitz.

Bluberry Blitz Central restaurant

"Blitz" may be the operative term here.

The Bluberry Blitz ($13) consists of Stoli Bluberry Vodka, lemon juice, muddled blueberries, Champagne and simple syrup.

We’d explain what a muddled blueberry is, but we are a Las Vegas blog, not a berry-muddler. Besides, if you choose to muddle, and it’s between two consenting adults, we won’t judge.

If that cocktail doesn’t look beyond delicious to you, you’re either pregnant or were raised by wolves. And, honestly, even wolves wouldn’t be able to resist a Bluberry Blitz. Except for the pregnant wolves, obviously.

Oh, and here’s a bonus Central menu item that did unbelievable things to our mouth: Cheese puffs.

Central cheese puffs

Some people call them "gougères," but this blog finds those people intolerable, and we will not be sharing our cheese puffs with them anytime soon.

You’ll swear little chunks of Heaven have broken off and plummeted to Earth. Directly into a decorative serving basket.

Here’s more about Central by Michel Richard at Caesars Palace. Reminder: It’s polite to ask before you put your mouth on something, even in Las Vegas.

Serendipity 3 Celebrates Third Birthday in Vegas

Serendipity 3 restaurant at Caesars Palace celebrated its three-year anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip with cake for lucky guests on April 16, 2012.

Serendipity 3

Executive chef Michael Wolf could write a book, "How to Instantly Become the Most Popular Person in the Room."

The popular restaurant marked the occasion with a proclamation from Mayor Carolyn Goodman (nothing in Vegas tends to happen without a proclamation from the mayor) and a new menu featuring three courses for, you guessed it, $33.33.

While Serendipity 3 is renowned for its desserts, the rest of its expansive menu is just as worthy of one’s attention. Big portions. Quality ingredients. Lots of comfort food, but with flair.

Serendipity 3 mac and cheese

Your taste buds are about to get all made love up on.

The $33.33 anniversary menu features starters of Las Vegas chicken strips, Safe at Home Kobe Sliders or a mixed green salad. That’s followed by an entree, including the Orchard Salad served with a walnut vinaigrette, a classic cheeseburger with fries or the Monster Meatballs & Spaghetti.

Serendipity 3 sliders

In some cultures, exotic dancers are tipped in sliders. Probably.

The third, and sadly final, course includes the restaurant’s popular Frrrozen Hot Chocolate (see below), Oreo-infused Frrrozen Hot Chocolate or classic hot fudge sundae.

Frrrozen Hot Chocolate

No, we did not fall asleep on our keyboard, it's actually spelled "Frrrozen Hot Chocolate."

Strolling outside Serendipity 3, next to the iconic fountains at Caesars Palace, we discovered a new addition to the landscaping: An herb garden.

Serendipity 3 herb garden

Some of the foliage at Caesars Palace is now edible.

Talk about fresh!

Executive chef Michael Wolf says many of the herbs are those one might have found in Italy during Roman times (in keeping with the Roman theme of Caesars Palace). Aside from supplementing the restaurant’s supply of fresh seasonings, the garden will also serve as a public reminder that Serendipity 3 excels in the realm of savory dishes in addition to its killer desserts.

Basil is also known as "Saint Joseph's Wort." But since that sounds somewhat disgusting, let's just stick with basil, cool?

Serendipity 3 is open at 8:00 a.m. each day, taking its last reservation at 11:00 p.m. (Sunday through Thursday) and midnight on weekends. Find out more.

Take a bite out of our delicious, poorly-focused gallery of photos from the third birthday party at Serendipity 3.

Restaurant Guy Savoy Awards Getting Ridiculous

Accolades are great, but this is starting to get ridiculous.

Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace has received a slew of honors lately, and honestly, at some point, it’s going to need to expand just to have a place to display all its awards.

Guy Savoy

Guy is pronounced "gee" (as in "geek") and Savoy is pronounced "salve-wah." Don't make us correct you in public.

Recently, Restaurant Guy Savoy was chosen by the editors of the Las Vegas Review-Journal as the “2012 Best Gourmet Restaurant” in its Best of Las Vegas awards.

Guy Savoy

This area is kind of a lounge thingy. There's probably a French word for it.

The Review-Journal accurately points out the fact, “AAA also made this Caesars Palace dining room one of four Las Vegas winners of its Five Diamond Awards last year.” In the world of taste buds, that’s a pretty big deal. Read more.

Guy Savoy

We'd mention the restaurant's Forbes Five Star Award, but again, ridiculous.

What other baubles does Restaurant Guy Savoy have for its metaphorical mantle? Well, for the sixth year in a row, Restaurant Guy Savoy was selected one of the “Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S.” by Gayot.com. Check it out.

Another respected site, Luxist, named Restaurant Guy Savoy one of the five best restaurants in the U.S. That’s the whole country, folks. Read more.

Guy Savoy

Chef Guy Savoy was born in Nevers, France. We would show you Nevers on a map, but we are a Las Vegas blog, not a cartographer.

This spring marks the fifth year Restaurant Guy Savoy has been at Caesars Palace, and the kudos just keep on coming. Since opening, the restaurant’s also received Michelin Guide’s Two Stars, Wine Spectator’s Grand Award and Four Stars from the Mobil Travel Guide. You know travel guides. They’re those things people used before Yelp.

So, if you’re looking for an incomparable dining experience in Vegas, Restaurant Guy Savoy might just fit the bill. It ain’t cheap, but did we mention the “incomparable” thing? Find out more about Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace, and take a peek at the biggest truffle you’ve ever seen in your life.

Seriously, Guy. If we can call you Guy. Think about leaving some awards for everybody else, cool?

No Yoke: Payard Patisserie Chocolate Easter Eggs

Yes, Easter is a religious holiday, but that doesn’t mean Sin City can’t celebrate it, too.

Payard Patisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace is offering a collection of chocolate Easter eggs, including new cheetah and zebra-inspired eggs offered for the first time this year.

Payard Easter egg

Objects in this photo are larger, and more caloric, than they appear.

The walls of the 6.5-inch eggs are made with dark chocolate (72% to be exact), as well as a combination of milk and white chocolate, and when broken open, the eggs are filled with additional Easter goodies, including miniature chocolate and candied eggs.

Payard Easter eggs

We tried to hide our disappointment that this was just a display model. Foiled again!

The special eggs start at $36.

Find out more about Payard Patisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace.

Oh, and have a great Easter, however you choose to celebrate it.
