Dog Casino Gives Pups the Vegas Experience (Kinda)

Perhaps not surprisingly, this blog loves casinos: The eye-popping carpeting, the slang, the clicking of gaming chips, the whole nine yards. This blog also happens to love dogs.

So, we were especially thrilled to discover the Dog Casino.

Dog Casino game

Why should humans have all the fun?

We quickly whipped out our wallet, stuffed with Blazing Sevens winnings from the night before, and acquired the Dog Casino to share it with you. We also thought it would make a great Mother’s Day present, but that’s beside the point.

While we didn’t immediately see the casino tie-in to this “fun interactive game,” we were comforted by a blurb on the box that said the game is slobber-proof.

Dog Casino

Even the most modern human casinos in Las Vegas aren't especially slobber-proof.

The Dog Casino, it turns out, is like a puzzle for your pooch. The box gives fair warning that it’s challenging. Along with photos of dogs in hats. The international symbol for skill level in dog casinos.

Dog Casino

Don't let these cloned dogs in graduation hats intimidate you.

So, here’s the “casino.” It’s a set of bones that rest on the top of a game board thingy.

Dog Casino

Irrelevant Vegas trivia: Craps dice are often called "bones."

Doggie treats are placed in small drawers along the edges of the game, and they can only be opened when the corresponding bone is removed.

Remove the correct bone, and dogs get the equivalent of a slot machine jackpot, but without the irksome tax obligations.

Dog Casino

Forget this ticket-in ticket-out business. It's treat time.

If all this seems a little complicated, don’t worry, there’s a training manual for pet owners included (as well as a CD we didn’t actually use).

Dog Casino

Yes, there's some reading involved. People still do that, you know.

We found the Dog Casino game in a local store here in Vegas for a hefty $64.99, but it sells for much less online (in the $40 range). Our local store split the difference.

While the similarities to a real casino are a tad tenuous, we still think this is a fun way to see just how clever your dog is. Like the box says, it’s challenging, and our test subject, Bonnie (below), seemed to prefer receiving her treats the old-fashioned way.

Dog Casino

Mom loved her Mother's Day present, by the way. The jury's still out for Bonnie.

If you dig dogs, too, you might want to read up on the dog-friendly PetStay program available at a number of Las Vegas hotels. Yes, treats are included. Delivered the old-fashioned way.

Free Imperial Palace Slot Tournament Is, Y’Know, Free

We can’t say it enough. This blog loves it some free Vegas stuff! The free Imperial Palace slot tournament, where you can win up to $1,500 in free slot play, definitely qualifies.

Here’s how it works. It’s complicated, so pay attention. Not the kind of attention you pay to your spouse. The real kind. You go to the Imperial Palace. You play a fake slot machine for five minutes. Top players of the day get prizes.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

Fact: $1,500 in free slot play is better than a shoulder massage from a Las Vegas showgirl. Actual results may vary.

The only caveat is one must be a Total Rewards loyalty club member to enter. It’s free to join, and heck, you can even sign up online from the comfort of your bath tub, French villa or cube farm.

The free Imperial Palace slot tournament moved recently, so you do actually have to pay attention this time: The slot tournament area is now on the third floor of the hotel’s Pagoda Tower, near the Race & Sports book and the theater Human Nature and Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas call home.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

Ain't no app for this! Winners are announced old-school.

If you’re unfamiliar with slot tournaments, entrants spend months training, often with highly-compensated coaches, building their endurance and perfecting their slot tournament strategies. We’re totally kidding. You sit and push a button. Over and over. It’s awesome because it’s all luck. No push-ups or memorizing some math-based strategy. Just have fun, already.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

The most exciting five minutes in Las Vegas that doesn't involved making love to this blog.

The free slot tournament at Imperial Palace is held Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Good luck, and if you win, this blog’s usual commission applies.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo

We love Vegas newness, but this blog also loves it some Vegas oldness.

Today’s random photo is a close-up of a classic slot machine.

class Las Vegas slot machine

This slot machine was so pretty, we were tempted to lick it. The feeling passed.

The colors. The textures. The history! Video screens are great, but sometimes, you just want to get your hands dirty.

This vintage slot machine is on display, along with other classics, at the Golden Gate in downtown Las Vegas. The Golden Gate is the oldest casino in Vegas. It opened in 1906.

Wheel of Fortune at Rio Vegas Coughs Up $1.2 Million

What would you do with $1.2 million? A player at Rio Las Vegas is going to have to figure out an answer to that question, because on May 1, 2012, the $1 Wheel of Fortune progressive jackpot hit for $1,224,957.

This blog loves when that happens!

Wheel of Fortune slot machine

This is not the actual winning machine. We can't be everywhere, you know.

They should call it the “Wheel of We Hope They Don’t Take Out Too Much in Taxes.”

This blog actually made a contribution to another Wheel of Fortune progressive machine at Flamingo a few hours prior to the big win at Rio. What might have been.

We don’t have any further information about the lucky guest at Rio, other than this magical number: $1,224,957. And, honestly, isn’t that enough?

As usual, the Wheel of Fortune progressive jackpot was reset to a cool mil after the win. This blog calls dibs on the next jackpot, but you can give it a try if you’d like.

The Biggest Las Vegas Slot Machine Win Ever

You just never know when Lady Luck’s going to slip into something more comfortable and give up the goods.

She was in an especially generous mood on March 21, 2003. That was the day the largest Las Vegas slot machine jackpot ever was paid, on a Megabucks machine at Excalibur, for $39,713,982.25.

The 25-year-old who won, for a $100 investment, will get  a cool $1.5 million a year until he’s 50.

Dream Big

This blog actually does have dreams about slot machine jackpots sometimes. We should probably have that looked at.

Here’s another interesting Vegas slot jackpot story you may not have heard before.

In 1987, a Vegas visitor from Arkansas, Kirk Erickson, hit a jackpot for $1,061,812 on a “Million Dollar Baby” machine at Caesars Palace. Unfortunately, he was just 19 at the time, and because he was underage (the legal age to gamble in Las Vegas is 21), the jackpot was invalid. He sued, but the court ruled against him in 1989.

The New Clue Slot, Only at Total Rewards Casinos

You know how movies inspired by popular board games are almost always, well, uninspired? Oddly, slot machines based on board games are almost always great. It’s one of the many mysteries of our universe. Like why anyone would prefer Twizzlers over Red Vines. Moving on.

One of the newest board game-inspired additions to the casino floor, exclusively at Total Rewards (Caesars Entertainment) casinos at the moment, is Clue. This timeless game translates perfectly to the slot machine realm, and you can get a feel for it with a free, online “mini-game” simulation thingy. Try it out.

Clue slot machine

This ain't your grandpa's cherry and melon symbol three-reeler, folks.

In the Clue slot machine, you start your game by choosing one of the classic characters from the board game, ones you probably know by heart: Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mr. Green, Mrs. White, Colonel Mustard or Mrs. Peacock. There are seven bonuses throughout the Clue mansion as players try to solve the mystery of who did what, with which weapon and in what room.

Here’s a snappy promotional video with some highlights of the Clue slot machine. We’re not sure that voice-over guy is actually British, but we’re going to let it slide because the game’s so fun.

Obviously, there’s a lot of entertainment value here, with tons of twists and turns, and after every bonus round, you get to guess the suspect, room and weapon for a shot at winning a “Solve-the-Mystery Progressive” jackpot. Which, to this blog, sounds like a good thing.

Clue slot machine

You could make a killing at this slot. We totally stole that line from the game's Web site.

As you play, you accumulate “Sleuth Points” which help open up new rooms. We tend to like hanging out in the Conservatory, just because we think it sounds cool, despite all the, you know, murders.

Here’s another cool aspect of the new Clue slot. When you play the free Clue “mini-game” online, you can unlock bonus rooms which you can then take advantage of when you’re playing in the real-world casino. Just make sure to log in with your Total Rewards player loyalty number. It’s free to join, of course, and you can sign up online, too.

Clue slot machine

We did not know that.

The new Clue slot machine is currently being rolled out across Vegas, so use the online Slot Finder to see if it’s available at your favorite casino. Let’s play some Clue, already!

Play Casino Games for Free on Facebook

This blog is always up for trying its luck at casino games like roulette, blackjack and slots, and now those games are available free on Facebook with the Caesars Casino game.

Caesars Casino on Facebook

Free coins do, indeed, make us feel welcome, guy-in-a-suit. Thanks.

The realistic roulette, blackjack and video slots games are completely free to play, with more games coming soon. Sorry, no craps yet! Nothing’s perfect in life.

Caesars Casino Facebook

Hmm, which game do we choose to crush first?

With the Caesars Casino app, it’s all the excitement of playing in your favorite casino, with none of the risk (or cigarette smoke), so what’s not to love? Oh, and nobody’s trying to high-five you without your permission. This blog hates that.

Caesars Casino

No nasty looks from other players if you split 10s. Yeah, baby!

We’re liking the bonuses, and as you play, you get other perks, and different game levels can be unlocked along the way, just to keep things lively. There’s a handy FAQ to quickly get you up-to-speed on the various games, but everything’s pretty intuitive if you’ve played the live versions of the games.

Caesars Casino

We're betting on red and black and green. It's not real money, so what do we care?

As you might suspect, since it resides on Facebook, the Caesars Casino is a fairly social game. You can gloat about your virtual casino accomplishments to friends, as well as being able to send them additional coins and video slot spins, blackjack hands and roulette spins. And unlike with games such as Farmville, your friends will actually enjoy hearing from you when you share your Caesars Casino updates. And if they don’t, are they really the kind of friends you want? We’re just saying.

We’re just kidding about the Farmville thing! (Actually, we’re just kidding about kidding about it. Farmville is annoying. This is a casino, not a farm. Casinos are fun. Farms smell. Moving on.)

Caesars Casino

Not annoying! Well, you might want to turn the sound off after the first six or eight hours. Just saying.

If you’re digging the Caesars Casino experience, and deplete your virtual coins, you can purchase more with real-world money. Yes, quite a few people do this, actually. Hey, fun’s fun. Twenty thousand coins for $5 is a pretty inexpensive form of entertainment when you get right down to it. But there’s no obligation. Just be lucky, and you’ll never need to purchase a Caesars Casino coin in your life. Or have lucky friends who can give you coins. That works, too.

Caesars Casino Facebook

Roman society, from what we can tell, was based largely on grapes and water features.

So, check out the new Caesars Casino. And if you’re curious: This blog is currently raking it in at roulette, having its posterior handed to it at blackjack, and holding steady at the “Road to Riches” and “Roman Triumphs” video slots.

Play in the Caesars Casino on Facebook, already.

The Slot Machine That Nearly Made Our Head Explode

At first glance, it looks like any other slot machine. It’s one of those Red, White and Blue reel slots. We’ve all seen them. Popular machine.

Caesars Palace high limit slot machine

Don't play innocent with us.

The first hint this might not be an ordinary slot machine is the fact is resides in the Caesars Palace high-limit slot area, called the “Palace Court Casino.”

The second hint? The part of the machine that says, “Touch to change credit value.” With $1,000 next to it.

Caesars Palace high limit slot

This would be the head exploding part.

That’s right. It’s a $1,000 machine. In other words, each “coin” is valued at $1,000. One thousand dollars, American.

And since no self-respecting slot player would be caught not playing “max bet,” that means it’s $2,000 per spin.

Unless you prefer using the arm, then it’s $2,000 per pull. Per. Pull.

So, if you can’t find this blog later today, that’s where we’ll be. On the $2,000-per-spin Red, White and Blue slot machine at Caesars Palace.

Surrounded by Victoria’s Secret models and Russell Brand and Napoleon Bonaparte and a talking manatee. Because, clearly, anything can happen in Las Vegas.

Three Examples That Prove Las Vegas Has Culture

You’ve heard people say it. Las Vegas doesn’t have “culture.” Oh, yeah? Well, this blog resents that assertion, and we’re here to say, “This blog resents that assertion.”

In a mere 10 minutes in a Las Vegas casino, we found three rock-solid examples that illustrate Sin City is bursting with culture!

Here’s example one.

DiVinci Diamonds

The doubters just got schooled.

That’s right. According to the Internet, Leonardo DaVinci was an “artist.” And artists make art. That’s culture, right there.

Time for example number two.

Rembrandt Riches

If it's possible to be schooled twice, that just happened.

Hello. It’s Rembrandt. Also an artist. A famous one, too. In fact, several of his important works, whatever those might be, appear in actual museums.

Example three.

Figaro

Being schooled just got schooled.

Oh, snap. “The Marriage of Figaro” was an opera. And that opera was written by none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a composer made famous by appearing in a movie we can’t quite recall the name of at this juncture. But that’s beside the point.

The evidence is overwhelming. Las Vegas is a city teeming with art and opera and movies we can’t quite recall the names of. Case closed.

They Can’t Fire This Blog, Neener-Neener-Neener!

Yes, we said it, “Neener.”

We can’t get fired for posting this photo because it’s a real slot machine at Rio Las Vegas!

Get Nuts Slot Machine

Neener cubed, baby.

Now, while we can’t get fired for that particular photo, we probably can be fired (or at least given a stern talking-to) for our Slot Machines or Adult Film Star Names? post. The things this Las Vegas blog does to keep you entertained.

Margaritaville Casino Opens to Fanfare at Flamingo

We aren’t completely sure we know what fanfare is, but we are sure there was a good bit of it as the much-anticipated Margaritaville Casino opened its doors at Flamingo Las Vegas on Oct. 1, 2011.

Margaritaville Casino Flamingo

Yay, Vegas newness.

What kind of Las Vegas blog would we be if we didn’t amble on over to the new casino to spend upwards of four hours taking photos of just about everything we could lay our hands on. (Complaints pending with Human Resources.)

Cocktail waitress

Just the right amount of sarong.

The first thing one notices at the new Margaritaville Casino is the energy. The laughter, the enthusiasm of the dealers, the boisterous revelry.

The energy could result from the casino being brand-spanking new, or it could just be it resides on the Las Vegas Strip (built-in boister). Perhaps it’s that the fun-filled atmosphere of the adjoining Margaritaville restaurant naturally flows into the new casino and 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar.

But no matter what the reason, the Margaritaville Casino has a great vibe, and you feel right at home the second you step through the door.

margaritaville_casino

Yes, that security guy wrestled us to the ground. We're fairly sure he meant it in a playful way.

The Margaritaville Casino is teeming with references to what’s commonly called the “Buffett Lifestyle,” including clever winks to Jimmy Buffett songs on custom banks of slot machines.

margaritaville_casino

Next time, we go with a "Parrothead," so they can explain all the song references.

The new casino features 22 table games and 220 slot machines.

Of course, we made a beeline to the craps table. We love the smell of fresh casino felt! Even the craps table works in a reference to the Jimmy Buffet hit, “Come Monday.”

margaritaville_casino

We played craps and got lucky at Margaritaville Casino! (That line's on the house, T-shirt department.)

The centerpiece of the Margaritaville Casino is the aforementioned 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar. Kind of like a shoreside shack, but with better hooch.

margaritaville_casino

See? Who says there aren't clocks in Vegas casinos?

Flair bartenders get their flair on (see below), entertaining guests enjoying a variety of signature cocktails.

margaritaville_casino

Beer is always top-of-mind at the Margaritaville Casino.

The drink menu has no prices on it, which is always a great sign, but they run in the $12 range, so not bad for a bar that has to be one of the best people-watching spots on the Strip. Cocktails include the Bahama Mama, Incommunicado, Shark Bite, Who’s to Blame, Woman to Blame and the Uptown Top Shelf Margarita (see below).

margaritaville_casino

The Uptown Top Shelf Margarita. Photographers can do flair, too, you know.

Gambling nerds like us will enjoy stumbling (literally, in some cases) upon some high-tech aspects of the table games, including the whiz-bang chip separator machine at the roulette table (below).

margaritaville_casino

We're adding this chip sorter to our list of great shows in Las Vegas.

Technically, the opening on Oct. 1 was what Vegas casinos refer to as a “soft opening.” We didn’t see any kinks to get out, but the official Grand Opening is slated for Oct. 14, 2011. Including, we assume, even more fanfare. We should probably look that word up at this point.

The Grand Opening will feature an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest margarita in history. That’s 2,125 gallons of tequila, by the way. This blog is so there. Read more.

margaritaville_casino

Insert this blog's stunning, yet gratuitous, photo of the Flamingo here.

Stay in the loop about all the Margaritaville Casino Las Vegas news, including street parties on Oct. 15 and 22 between O’Sheas and Flamingo, by following Flamingo on Twitter or by liking Flamingo on Facebook.

Of course, you’ll want to skinny dip in our exclusive photo gallery of the Margaritaville Casino’s opening weekend.

Free Vegas Attraction: Caesars Palace Freak-Out

All right, we’ll admit up front we’re using the term “attraction” pretty loosely here, but we think this qualifies as a fun Vegas diversion.

There you are, hanging out, playing slots in the casino at Caesars Palace, and you notice an impressive bust. No, not that kind of bust! Please stay focused. The “statue” kind of bust. Or is it a “statue”? (Cue ominous music.)

Caesars Palace bust

Not all that freaked out yet? Oh, you will be. (Pause for effect.) You will be.

Here’s the thing. It’s not an ordinary “statue.” Sin City doesn’t do ordinary. And if it were an ordinary “statue,” we wouldn’t keep putting it in “quotation marks,” trust us.

So, what is it, then? We have no idea. But it appears to be some kind of Disney-inspired, floating head freak-out-facilitation thingy (not the official name, probably).

You walk back and forth in front of this cleverly-designed apparition, and it watches your every move. Think we’re kidding? Check out this glaringly amateurish video we captured the other day. Warning: The feint of heart may not want to partake in this particular Las Vegas freak-out.

Told you it was cool. And freaky. And it’s free, 24/7 at Caesars Palace.

You can find the freak-out bust across from the entrance to The Colosseum. They have some other cool stuff at Caesars Palace, too, with more on the way. Find out more. If you’re looking for more things to do in Las Vegas, we can make that happen.

A Colossal Las Vegas Marriage Proposal at Bally’s

Las Vegas weddings are the stuff of legend, with a wedding for every style and budget. But Vegas can also deliver epic marriage proposals, as a couple from San Diego discovered at Bally’s Las Vegas.

Jim Canfield, a business consultant, knew he wanted to propose to his girlfriend Paige in Las Vegas (who wouldn’t?), but he also wanted to propose in a unique and unforgettable way. He did some research and contacted the team at Bally’s Las Vegas. After some creative thinking and extensive planning, Jim got to propose in a way we think is entirely awesome.

Las Vegas wedding proposal

Thanks, Jim, for setting the bar impossibly high for every other guy on Earth.

Jim cooked up a story about a special promotion where those having a birthday would be able to take a spin of the giant slot machine at Bally’s. Little did Paige know, earlier in the day, slot machine techs had turned off the slot machine and replaced the usual symbols with the message, “Will you marry me?”

The wedding proposal went off without a hitch, and we’ve got exclusive video to prove it!

This Las Vegas blog has personally spoken to several people who have deemed this the “Most Romantic Wedding Proposal Ever.” Hey, it’s a huge slot machine, so who are we to argue?

Following the proposal, and Paige saying “yes” (of course), her first call was to her father. Jim had already asked her father for her hand, which we kind of think is old-school fabulous.

Vegas proposal

Jim reels in his bride-to-be. Reels. See what we did there?

We couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to find out more about the colossal slot machine that was such an integral part of this couple’s big day. Come to find out, the nickname of the machine is “Colossus.” We’re told it’s also called “Big Bertha” by those who work at Bally’s.

This isn’t the first time a proposal has been done via slot reel, but the last time was a decade ago. Shutting the slot machine down costs the hotel an estimated $100 an hour. The machine was originally made by IGT, but they’re no longer being manufactured. In fact, there used to be two large machines at Bally’s, but one had to be dismantled for parts to keep Colossus operating. If these big machines were made today, they’d probably cost in the range of $80,000 to $90,000.

Slot tech Bally's

Sal, a slot tech at Bally's, works his magic to provide the proposal of a lifetime.

Colossus is a true attraction. It’s so popular, in fact, that the marble floor tiles in front of the giant slot machine’s “arm” are actually worn down from the traffic.

We couldn’t help but wonder, “If they can make ‘Will you marry me?’ appear on the reels, what’s to keep a casino from finessing the wheels at other times?” We were assured that in order to make the message appear, the machine had to be set to a special, seldom-used and closely-monitored test mode. The wheels can’t be manipulated by the casino for normal play. Hey, we thought we’d ask.

But enough about Colossus, and more about Jim and Paige’s colossal time in Vegas!

The canoodling couple followed up their winning proposal with dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant in the adjoining Paris Las Vegas. Of course we followed. That’s how this blog rolls.

Just one of the spectacular views from the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris.

The Eiffel Tower Restaurant is known as one of the most romantic spots in Las Vegas, and the couple snagged a window-side table so they could enjoy the jaw-dropping views of the Bellagio’s dancing fountains during dinner.

Photo op! Times, oh, infinity.

Thanks to these lovebirds for letting us tell their heartwarming story, and we hope they’ll invite us to their wedding. Which we can only assume will take place in Las Vegas. Hint, hint.

Planet Hollywood Hosts “Hangover 2″ Red Carpet

If you weren’t in Vegas this weekend, you missed a lot! On May 21, Planet Hollywood hosted a flash-popping red carpet for the Las Vegas debut of “The Hangover: Part II,” the follow-up to the most successful R-rated comedy of all time.

We can almost forgive the filmmakers for not setting the sequel in Las Vegas, mostly because “Hangover II” is so flapping funny.

They're back!

The red carpet featured the supporting cast of “Hangover II,” including Justin Bartha who appeared in the original, and talented newcomers Mason Lee and Jamie Chung (pictured below).

Justin Bartha won over the capacity crowd at Planet Hollywood by jumping the velvet rope and schmoozing with fans. Seeing what a nice guy he is, we were kind of bummed at how small his role is in the new movie. Oh. We probably should have put “Spoiler Alert” before that, but this blog doesn’t live by society’s rules.

Anyhoo, this sounds like our cue for some exclusive video from the red carpet. Note: “Hangover II” takes place in Thailand, hence “One Night in Bangkok.”

Like we said, “Hangover 2″ more than holds its own with the original in the hilarity department. The wolf pack is back, with Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) wreaking havoc, of course. Mr. Chow (played by Ken Jeong) returns and chills with the guys during their Thai exploits, too.

Hey, taking photos is supposed to be our gig!

Bonus “Hangover 2″ factoid: Yes, a smoking monkey plays a pivotal role in the movie. However, the monkey never actually used a lit cigarette. The smoke was done with CGI. Oh, “Spoiler Alert.” Oops.

Las Vegas favorites also strutted their stuff on the “Hangover 2″ red carpet, including Holly Madison and Josh Strickland, stars of Peepshow at Planet Hollywood, as well as Angel Porrino and The Gazillionaire, currently featured in Absinthe, the adult circus, at Caesars Palace.

Vegas fixtures Josh Strickland, Holly Madison and Angel Porrino.

Caesars headliner Matt Goss, Flamingo magician Nathan Burton, comedian Carrot Top and others also made the adulation-filled trek down the red carpet.

Matt Goss works the carpet with a dapper new chapeau.

We should also note the presence of a number of well-known professional athletes on the red carpet whom we did not recognize at all because, well, this blog is not a sports person so much. There is a reasonable probability they included Matt Barnes of the L.A. Lakers, Javell McGee of the Washington Wizards, Verran Tucker of the Kansas City Chiefs and others. Look, we are a Las Vegas blog, not a Marv Albert.

Jamie Chung

In lieu of photos of big, sweaty athletes, we're posting another pic of actress Jamie Chung. So sue us.

A highlight of the red carpet was the unveiling of the new “Hangover” slot machine. We convinced the folks at IGT (who make the new machine) to put it in demo mode so we could take it for a test drive. Cha-to-the-imaginary-ching. Take a look.

The new game is a blast, with tons of references from the original “Hangover.” Caesars Entertainment casinos in Las Vegas, and across the country, will have the game exclusively for the first two months of its release.

Of course, you’ll want to luxuriate in the pore-cleansing goodness of our exclusive photo gallery from the Las Vegas premiere of “The Hangover: Part II.”
