So, You Think You Know Vegas?

It’s time for another installment of “So, You Think You Know Vegas?” Why? Because “taking a photo” is a lot easier than “actually writing a blog post,” of course.

Where in Sin City did we take this photo?

All hands

We were going to call this feature, "Where the Hell Are We?," but our mom reads this blog sometimes.

Post your best guess in the Comments section for bragging rights. (Translation: “What, you need a prize for everything?”)

“Jubilee!” Showgirls Get Frocked at Bally’s Las Vegas

On July 30, 2011, “Jubilee!” at Bally’s Las Vegas will celebrate its 30th anniversary as well as securing its place as the longest-running show on the Las Vegas Strip.

“Jubilee!” is the last production show of its kind, and the “retro-glam” production is considered a must-see for Las Vegas visitors from around the world.

In honor of the 30-year anniversary, one of the show’s original costume designers, Pete Menefee, was asked to create new frocks for the “Jubilee!” number featuring the sinking of the Titanic. We dropped by Bally’s during a costume fitting and the legendary designer shared some insights about the new costumes as well as the history and longevity of “Jubilee!”

One of our favorite revelations: Parts of the costumes use material from industrial water purifiers to increase their durability. The costumes in “Jubilee!” are definitely built to last.

“Jubilee!” was staged and directed by the legendary Donn Arden, and more than 18 million people seen the lavish show at Bally’s.

More “Jubilee!” facts? You got it. There are 85 dancers in the show, and showgirls must be at least 5’8″ tall, while the men have to be six feet or taller. Over 30 years, the show has featured more than a thousand dancers.

Jubilee

Pete Menefee, the man behind many of the eye-popping costumes in "Jubilee!," and showgirls Sarah and Crystal.

The “Jubilee!” stage is an astonishing 190 feet long and 73 feet deep, making it half the size of a football field. Thank you, news release, for making us sound like we can do math.

The stage is 15 stories tall from the bottom of the orchestra pit to the roof. Just enough room for those gravity-defying hats!

“Jubilee! features a mind-boggling 100 sets and backdrops, 100,000 light bulbs and more than 125 miles of wiring. About 4,200 pounds of dry ice are used each week to create smoke effects, and 10 pounds of explosives are used nightly in the show’s 50 pyrotechnic effects.

More than 1,000 costumes are worn during the show, and it takes a crew of 18 people to keep the wardrobe in tip-top shape. Insider fact: Some of the feathers used in the costumes in “Jubilee!” are vulture feathers.

Thanks to Pete Menefee for taking the time to chat with us about this fascinating aspect of Las Vegas entertainment, and here’s to another 30 years of “Jubilee!” Vegas just wouldn’t be Vegas without it.

Military Members Treated to Vegas Show, Spa Deals

Memorial Day is fast approaching (May 30), and the Las Vegas Strip has risen to the occasion with a slew of great perks and freebies for members of the military during May.

Several Caesars Entertainment resorts are inviting military members to enjoy spa and show offerings free or at discounted prices. Active and retired military personnel can present their government-issued military I.D. cards to take advantage of the various offers.

Select deals are listed below.

flag

This blog's dad put up this flag. He was in the military. Ah, the circularity of the universe.

At Bally’s Vegas, “Jubilee!” is offering two-for-one tickets, as is “The Price is Right Live” stage show.

At Flamingo, funnyman George Wallace is offering free show tickets to members of the military throughout May. Quick-witted comedian Vinnie Favorito has an ongoing half-price ticket offer. And the saucy “X Burlesque” has an ongoing two-for-one ticket deal. The Flamingo Spa is offering 20-percent off all spa treatments.

Goodies at Harrah’s Las Vegas include free show tickets to “Defending the Caveman” (up to two per military member, additional tickets can be purchased two-for-one). Tribute show “Legends in Concert” has an ongoing half price ticket offer for military members, and the Harrah’s Spa is offering 20% off all spa treatments.

At the Imperial Palace, “Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” has an ongoing half-price ticket offer. Same goes for “Human Nature.” Matsuri is offering a $10 general admission ticket and $15 VIP ticket through Memorial Day. The Imperial Palace Spa is providing 20% off all spa treatments.

military member

We are a Las Vegas blog. We do not get all weepy. Generally.

Over at Paris Vegas, adult hypnotist Anthony Cools has an ongoing two-for-one ticket discount.

At Rio Vegas, the “Chippendales” male revue has an ongoing two-for-one ticket discount for those in the armed services, and the Rio Spa & Salon is offering 30% off all spa treatments.

Except where noted, these deals are good throughout May, 2011. We salute our military members and hope they’ll take advantage of these well-deserved discounts and freebies.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo

A random photo from the most photogenic city on the planet.

Bally's Las Vegas

This tunnel leads to a monorail stop. A monorail is like a train. Paging, Dr. Freud!

We were going to Photoshop an apostrophe into the Bally’s Las Vegas sign, but we are a Las Vegas blog, not an apostrophe enforcer.

A New Outpost for Discount Show Tickets in Vegas

Taking its cue from the all-access, 24-hour Buffet of Buffets deal (unlimited access to seven great Vegas buffets), the All-Stage Pass has been creating some buzz of its own.

This affordable pass (just $99) delivers all the shows you can consume in a 48-hour period. The deal includes 17 shows up and down the Strip at a variety of Caesars Entertainment hotels.

Previously, All-Stage Passes had to be purchased at the Planet Hollywood box office. Now, a convenient, sultry, buff, buxom, leggy (actual results may vary) booth has been opened to spare you the trek.

Discount Show Tickets

Yes, buxom! (Sorry, guys, it's a marketing thing. Go with it.)

The new discount ticket booth is located in front of Bally’s Las Vegas, pretty much the half-way mark of the Strip. At the moment, only All-Stage Passes can be purchased at the “Cheap and Easy Ticket Sin Shack” (we just made that name up), but plans are in the works to offer individual show ticket deals in the future.

One caveat. This sign appears on the side of the Ticket Taj (again, made up name).

Pepsi proudly served

Don't get your hopes up.

We have confirmed that Pepsi is not actually sold in the booth. (We think it means Pepsi is sold at the shows and in the hotels where the shows are.) Sorry. While the guys in the booth had a good laugh when we ordered a diet Pepsi, we suspect that joke might be getting a little old at this point, so maybe just skip the idle chit-chat if you stop by. Remember, your 48 hour clock starts ticking at the time of purchase, so have a plan in place.

The $99 price applies to Total Rewards members (the Caesars Entertainment player loyalty program that’s free to join), and it’s $119 for non-members.

The new discount ticket booth is open 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day.

Joey Fatone Returns to “Price is Right” at Bally’s

Former NSYNC member and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Joey Fatone is scheduled to again host The Price is Right Live stage show at Bally’s Las Vegas, Jan. 25 through Feb. 5.

We caught him during his last stint at Bally’s, and he seemed perfectly suited to his hosting duties, keeping things lively with his affable personality and self-depricating humor.

Joey Fatone

Joey Fatone clearly loves this gig, so he's back!

Fatone will enlist audience members to play for their chance to win thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. The show features such fan-favorite games as “Plinko,” “Cliff Hangers,” “The Big Wheel” and the popular “Showcase.”

A highlight of the show? The hilarious video clips from the “The Price is Right” TV show, including contestants chasing longtime host Bob Barker and others jumping down the aisle while experiencing, well, tube top malfunctions. ‘Nuff said.

Find out more about “The Price is Right Live,” a fun, fast-paced show and one of the few in town where a hefty chunk of the audience goes home with cash and prizes.

Price is Right Live

What, this whole blog post had to be about Joey Fatone? Get past it!

Sea Brings Thai Experience to Bally’s Vegas

“I’m in the mood for Thai,” you say? A new restaurant at Bally’s Vegas has you covered when you’re having cravings for Thai food on the Las Vegas Strip.

Sea: The Thai Experience at Bally's

See? It already feels like an "experience" a little, doesn't it?

Sea: The Thai Experience is one of the few Thai restaurants on the Strip and offers up a variety of “Thai fusion” specialties with roots in authentic cuisine you’d find in places like Phuket, Thailand’s largest island.

Oh, please, like we weren’t going to find a way to mention Phuket in a post about Thai food.

Sea: The Thai Experience at Bally's

Please resist the temptation to find enlightenment during dinner. It can distract other patrons.

Sea is an intimate space, adjacent to Bally’s Steakhouse, that seats about 100, with a private dining room that can accommodate 25.

It’s a little hard to describe, but When you enter Sea restaurant, there’s this calm that washes over you. Maybe it’s the reflecting pool, the subdued light, the soft-spoken, attentive staff or the striking, Bangkok-inspired interior design. Whatever accounts for it, we love it.

Sea Thai

"Can you just post some food pics, already?" (Your impertinence is duly noted.) The popular Lemongrass Chicken.

Sea: The Thai Experience opened its first location in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 2002, and has been a favorite of filmmakers, appearing in “Sex and the City” and “Garden State.”

Stuffed Crab Rangoon

Sea's Stuffed Crab Rangoon might be too pretty to eat.

Aside from its on-screen celebrity, Sea has found fame with its menu as well. A diverse menu offers specialty Thai and Vietnamese dishes including the aforementioned grilled lemongrass chicken, a classic pork chop, volcanic chicken and pineapple curry duck.

Lettuce Wrap

The Lettuce Wraps are pretty, too.

Guests can pair their entrees with beer, wine or specialty cocktails such as the suwanmalee, a Thai lychee martini, or the sakuntala, Sea’s signature mojito. Yes, we copied and pasted that from the news release. Get your own blog if you want to get all researchy.

Sea: The Thai Experience

Could we just eat here every day?

Prices are quite reasonable, and you get to choose your level of food hotness, of course. And things do get hot at Sea. The chicken we tried was spiced so magnificently, we made references to Phuket several times during our visit.

Chicken Wing Lollipops

The Chicken Wing Lollipops were so spicy, they nearly made us fertile. Or something.

Check out our surprisingly high-quality photo gallery featuring Sea: The Thai Experience.

Today’s Free Vegas Getaway Hook-Up from Bally’s

We may have mentioned in the past how much this Las Vegas blog loves it some free, especially when it comes to free stuff in Sin City.

Bally’s just started a new sweepstakes on its Facebook page, and a lucky winner will receive a stay at Bally’s Vegas, two tickets to Jubilee!, the most sequin-tacular (not a real word) show on the Strip, two spa passes and two passes to the Bally’s Sterling Brunch, a feast so sublime, it consistently gets raves on Trip Advisor and other review sites.

Jubilee at Bally's

Definitely not a gratuitous "Jubilee!" photo.

The sweepstakes runs through Dec. 13, with a winner to be announced a few days later. It’s free to enter, so have at it and good luck.

Bonus diversion: Check out the Official Rules for this giveaway. They’re free and fun to read! Enjoy fancy terms like “hereby” and “void” and “natural person” and “cause of action.” All, absolutely free! Don’t say we never hooked you up.

Steakhouse 46 Closes: Five Steakhouse Alternatives

Steakhouse 46 at Flamingo Las Vegas has officially closed up shop, we’re sad to say. This beloved steakhouse was named after the year the Flamingo first opened, 1946.

Steakhouse 46

One of Steakhouse 46's specialties was its basted meats. "We're master basters!" they would proclaim. At which point we were probably fired.

Bonus Flamingo factoid: The original Flamingo hotel cost $6 million to build.

“So, now where will I ever find great steak on the Strip?” you ask, providing us the perfect opportunity to talk up some steakhouses in the neighborhood of the famed Flamingo, five to be exact.

Let’s start with the Steakhouse at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Casino, a restaurant that harkens back to the early days of Vegas, with crushed re velvet booths, a stained-glass dome ceiling and an old-fashioned attention to putting the customer first.

Steakhouse at Bill's

Yes, we take photos of everything. Leave us alone. It's easier than having a life.

Our Steakhouse at Bill’s hook-up: On Mondays, get any bottle of wine half-off with the purchase of an entree.

Next, just across Flamingo Blvd., it’s the Bally’s Steakhouse.

Bally's Steakhouse

The Bally's Steakhouse has done it all and seen it all. We can't wait to read its autobiography.

This welcoming steakhouse has a storied history, and continues to serve up reasonably-priced, high-quality fare. Our insider tip: Before dinner, have a cocktail at the brand-new Steakhouse Bar. The perfect spot to meet up with friends, or those who are about to be. (Hello, it’s Vegas!)

Next on our Tour d’Meat (not a real term), continuing south on Las Vegas Blvd., is Les Artistes Steakhouse at Paris Las Vegas. Feast your eyes on the meaty gloriousness of Les Artistes below.

Les Artistes at Paris

Oh, now we have your attention. When it comes to Vegas, it's all about bone-in. (Can't fire us twice!)

Les Artistes is a singular dining experience. It’s supremely romantic, and the architecture is nearly as impressive as the menu. We’ve yet to have anything at Les Artistes we haven’t loved, and that includes our latest visit, where we’re pretty sure we ate escargot, something we never thought we do without being tortured first.

On the other side of Flamingo, in our quest for steak, there’s the Range Steakhouse at Harrah’s.

Range Steakhouse at Harrah's

We haven't personally eaten here yet, but it smells good, so that's a great start.

You’ll find all your favorites, including seafood, and wrap-around windows provide stunning views of the Strip, including the entrance to The Forum Shops across the street at Caesars Palace.

And speaking of Caesars, give Neros a try.

Neros Caesars Palace

No apostrophe, just like there's none in Caesars. Whip those factoids out at your next dinner party.

Neros is more than a steakhouse, but that’s where this well-respected restaurant excels. The Black Angus, USDA-certified prime beef at Neros comes from Creekstone Farms and is dry-aged for nearly a month before being served. Unforgettable.

That should tide you over until we find out more about what’s next for the space occupied by Steakhouse 46. One thing’s guaranteed: There’s always something new to see (or devour) in Vegas.

Oh, and thanks to our friends at VegasChatter.com, one of our favorite Vegas blogs (that isn’t us), for the tip about the closing of Steakhouse 46. Hey, we can’t be everywhere at once.

A Vegas Hitman, Police Officer and “Jubilee!” Dancer

It’s another “only in Vegas” moment. Where else in the world could someone make a living as a police officer and, simultaneously, a featured dancer in “Jubliee!,” the world’s best-known showgirl stage spectacular? Anthony “Hitman” Brown does just that.

Anthony Brown Jubileed dancer

What can't Anthony Brown do, exactly?

The multi-talented (understatement of the year) Brown joined the cast of Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas in 1985, left for awhile to perform with “Siegfried & Roy,” then returned to become a principal performer in the show that will mark its 30th anniversary in 2011.

Brown was recently interviewed by NPR’s Liane Hansen. Listen online.

Anthony Brown has been “moonlighting” as a Las Vegas police officer for 22 years, and currently teaches classes in “defensive tactics.”

Brown has also fought professionally in Muay Thai, a style of kickboxing that originated in Thailand. At this point, nothing surprises us about Anthony Brown.

Bonus Anthony Brown factoid: His wife is also a principal performer in “Jubilee!” See it at Bally’s.

Cassie and Greg: Two of the Coolest People We Know

How cool are Vegas fans Cassie and Greg? Here’s how cool. They invited this Las Vegas blog to their upcoming wedding at Flamingo Las Vegas!

Cassie and Greg

Cassie and Greg show the rest of us how to rock some sunglasses.

Hell, yes, we’ll be there. And not just because weddings often involve liquor and bridesmaids.

Aside from the ceremony at the Flamingo Wedding Chapel, Cassie and Greg have a full Sin City schedule planned, including a post-nuptials dinner at the Paradise Garden Buffet (a hugely popular spot for Vegas wedding dinners) and dancing (etcetera) at Bally’s.

Thanks for the invitation, you guys!

Matt Goss Song “Lovely Las Vegas” Gets Sparkly Video

Caesars Palace crooner Matt Goss just released a glitzy new video for his song, “Lovely Las Vegas.” You’re seeing it here first!

Goss created the soulful homage to Sin City as a theme for a local news program. The song proved so popular, he did a full-fledged version, now immortalized on the YouTubes.

The video features many of the most recognizable resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, including Caesars Palace, Flamingo Las Vegas, Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s Las Vegas and others.

Matt Goss

Matt Goss belts out "Lovely Las Vegas" in one of the most lovely spots in Las Vegas.

Gotta love how the former pop sensation’s pipes truly shine in this memorable tune. Ever get the feeling the guy could sing the telephone book and make it sound cool? (Uh, they still make phone books, right?)

Anyway, you can catch Matt Goss in person, in the Gossy Room at Cleopatra’s Barge, at Caesars Palace. Snappy chapeau optional. Learn more. And for all things Gossy, visit his official site here.

Reality TV Star Mayhem Slams Into Sin City

It was a weekend of reality star mayhem, as familiar faces from America’s most popular reality TV series, including “Big Brother” and “Survivor,” came to town for a series of events.

This blog is obsessed with reality TV, so it was a treat to catch up with tons of reality personalities at a rip-roaring BBQ and beer pong tournament at Hogs and Heifers Saloon, a downtown haunt known for its, well, “vibrant” atmosphere and motorcycle-loving clientele.

Hogs and Heifers Saloon

Brace yourself. It's downtown's Hogs and Heifers Saloon.

The boom in reality TV in recent years has resulted in dozens, if not hundreds, of instant “celebrities” enjoying their 15 minutes of fame. Many of these folks also, apparently, love Vegas and beer pong.

Sugar

"Sugar" from "Survivor: Gabon" shows off one of her beer pong distraction techniques.

The Hogs and Heifers event was filled with recognizable faces, although it was tough at times to remember their names, even for hardcore reality TV fans.

Thankfully, VIP bracelets helped us snag photos of reality stars past and present. Sorry we can’t ID them all. We are a Las Vegas blog, not a reality TV encyclopedia.

Howie Gordon

The very memorable Howie Gordon from "Big Brother 6."

Some of the folks we could identify included: Casey Turner (“Big Brother 11″), Michelle Costa (“Big Brother 10″), Howie Gordon (“Big Brother 6″), “America’s Player” Eric Stein (“Big Brother 8″), Sheila Kennedy (“Big Brother 9″)and buff Jessie Godderz (“Big Brother 10″).

Hogs and Heifers

Several of the reality folks joined the Hogs and Heifers waitresses atop the bar for a dance. Wait, reality stars like attention? Who knew?

Other reality stars in attendance were Chelsia Hart (“Big Brother 9″), Daniele Donato (“Big Brother 8″), Jessica “Sugar” Kiper (“Survivor”), Nick Starcevick (“Big Brother 8″), Jon “Jonny Fairplay” Dalton (“Survivor: Pearl Islands”) and Chima Simone (“Big Brother 11″).

Even if you may not know the names, chances are, you know the faces!

Jessie Godderz

Everybody's favorite "Big Brother" muscleman, Jessie Godderz.

The gloves came off for a reality star beer pong blow-out. Much-maligned Jonny Fairplay got the award for being first out of the beer pong tournament. He suffered the same misfortune after being voted out first on “Survivor: Micronesia.”

Jonny Fairplay

It just wasn't Jonny Fairplay's day. On a bright note, from what could see, he was, in fact, playing fairly.

Several events led up to the festive Hogs and Heifers gathering, including a meet-and-greet at Bally’s on Sep. 17 and red carpet event at Paris Las Vegas on Sep. 18, all part of the “Reality TV Vegas Bash 2010.”

Daniele Donato

Recognize the formerly-blonde Daniele Donato from "Big Brother 8"? How about her dad, "Evel Dick" Donato?

Proceeds from the beer pong event went to Faith House, a nonprofit that helps women and children in abusive relationships. Find out more.

Learn more about the colorful history of Hogs and Heifers. Including its famed Wall of Discarded Bras.

Hogs and Heifers bras

Did we mention how colorful Hogs and Heifers is? It's like a Victoria's Secret warehouse exploded.

The gritty downtown bar is sure to be the center of the action during Vegas’ upcoming Las Vegas Bikefest, Sep. 30 to Oct. 3. Find out more.

Of course we’ve got an exclusive gallery of more reality TV stars as they beer pong their way into Vegas history. At least the next 15 minutes of it, anyway.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Showgirl

Your hometown is awesome, no doubt. But there’s something Sin City has that your hometown probably doesn’t: Random showgirls.

Yep, in Las Vegas, you’ll often spot showgirls just out and about, on their way to some show or event. Since it’s our job to chronicle the Vegas experience, we figure it’s our job to provide you with the occasional random showgirl. You’re welcome.
