The Cocktail That’s Also a Vegas Attraction

There are a couple of things this blog highly recommends during a Las Vegas visit. The first involves chatting with an exotic dancer about how college is going.

This blog also recommends enjoying a cocktail at the elegant bar inside the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, and riding to the top of the Eiffel Tower for a view that will simply knock your g-string off.

You can now do those last two things we mentioned (you’re on your own with the exotic dancer), with a few bucks knocked off in the process.

Paris Las Vegas cocktail

You owe this blog so very, very much.

Here’s the deal. When you visit the Eiffel Tower Restaurant, order the “Top of the Tower” specialty cocktail. In addition to your cocktail, you’ll also get a ticket for a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower (usually $15.50). The cost for both is $28, which results in a $5.50 savings.

Oh, and did we mention how completely, mind-numbingly awesome this cocktail is? We do leave out important details from time to time. You’ll live.

Here’s the recipe if you’d foolishly like to try making this at home: Sky Vodka (2 oz.), Domaine de Canton (ginger liquor, 1/2 oz.), Ginger Beer (1/2 oz.), Sweet and Sour (1/4 oz.), grated Star Anise and a garnish of an orange slice, candied ginger and mint leaf. Trust us, it’s better when the Eiffel Tower Restaurant bartender makes it.

Top of the Tower cocktail

Don't you make us show another photo of this drink with a red menu as a background.

So, have a sip, then take a 46-story elevator ride to one of the best views in Vegas. Oh, and bring some additional sets of eyes to fully take in that heart-stopping view. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Gordon Ramsay Officially Opens Steakhouse at Paris

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was in rare form at Paris Las Vegas today as he officially opened his new restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Steak. Yes, we have exclusive photos. Haven’t you learned how this blog rolls by now?

Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Vegas

Gordon Ramsay didn't disappoint!

Ramsay gave a lively cooking demonstration for members of the media, and expertly navigated a Q&A laced with Ramsayisms we can’t actually report due to Internet obscenity laws, many of which we just made up.

Actually, we found Gordon Ramsay to be as funny and charming as we’d hoped, tossing out good-natured zingers throughout his interactions with journalists and fans.

Gordon Ramsay

Pulse of Vegas blog exclusive: Gordon Ramsay confirmed to us that when he calls someone "Donkey," it's not meant as a compliment.

While Ramsay did a great job of keeping visitors in stitches, it was also clear he’s serious about the business of food.

He also seems to have a soft spot in his heart for Las Vegas, which tends to go over really well with Las Vegas blogs.

You done good, chef!

See more exclusive photos, several of which are actually in focus, of Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas.

Gordon Ramsay

You know how some people have impish grins, but they're not impish? Gordon Ramsay isn't that.

Ramsay said he’ll be in Vegas every couple of weeks as Gordon Ramsay Steak establishes its footing, then expects to directly oversee his “brigade” at least monthly thereafter. He recently purchased a home in California, and quipped, “It’s great to be able to get here in 15 minutes. I have a private jet.” After a beat, he added, “No, I don’t. Seriously? I’m just kidding.”

Gordon Ramsay also took the opportunity to mention that the winner of the 10th season of his popular reality TV show, “Hell’s Kitchen,” will win a head chef position at Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris. The new season premieres June 4. A direct Vegas tie-in on “Hell’s Kitchen”? As if this blog weren’t already a huge fan! Remember when the contestants got a drop-in from Rio headliner’s Penn & Teller back in 2012? Check it out.

Welcome to Las Vegas, Chef Ramsay, and thanks for stirring things up at Paris Las Vegas. Because he’s a chef. See what we did there?

First Look: Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Vegas

While the much-anticipated Gordon Ramsay Steak restaurant officially opens May 11, 2012, we couldn’t wait, so we breached security for a sneak preview of this photogenic new eatery at Paris Las Vegas.

Gordon Ramsay Steak

You can't miss it. Just ask Dr. Freud for directions.

The restaurant can be found next to the casino’s high limit salon.

The eye-catching entrance to Gordon Ramsay Steak was inspired by The Chunnel, the tunnel between London and Paris. It’s slightly smaller than the Chunnel, we think, but we didn’t have a tape measure.

Gordon Ramsay Steak

The Chunnel took six years to build. Gordon Ramsay Steak took about six months. Note: This tunnel doesn't require a ticket.

Chef Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant, his first in Las Vegas, was designed by EDG Interior Architecture + Design, and trust us, we wouldn’t be mentioning that fact if they hadn’t done an impressive job.

Gordon Ramsay Steak bar

The bar has a cool vibe this blog hopes to experience often.

A centerpiece of the interior is the abstract sculpture high above (see below). The neon tubes hanging from the ceiling represent Gordon Ramsay’s hand movements while preparing his signature Beef Wellington, according to one server. The art piece was created by Andrey Berezowsky of SWON Design.

Gordon Ramsay Steak sculpture

Chef Ramsay clearly has very fast hands.

The restaurant seats about 200 people, and features a two-story dining room and, of course, a chef’s table. The restaurant covers about 7,500 square feet, if you’re into the numbers thing.

The tunnel-themed bar separates the main restaurant from the lounge, which will have its own menu with smaller plates. It’s like two destinations in one.

Gordon Ramsay Steak

Gordon Ramsay brings it.

Signature cocktails abound, colorfully displayed in iPads. Their names include the English Garden, Vesper, Extra Dry Steakhouse Martini, HK Antioxident (HK stands for “Hell’s Kitchen,” Chef Ramsay’s hit reality series we’re completely addicted to), South Side, Red Lion, Side Car, Primm’s Cup and the Strawberry Martini.

Gordon Ramsay Steak

This blog likes its cocktails as interactive as possible.

The menu is overseen by Executive Chef Kevin Hee, and showcases Chef Ramsay’s take on traditional American steakhouse dishes. The menu will change seasonally, so guests will always have something new to look forward to. Something we hadn’t heard before: At the beginning of each seasonal menu, the first 1,000 guests will receive an autographed item from Chef Ramsay. We can’t remember if it’s a photo or a menu. We were too busy drooling over our amazing mac and cheese.

Gordon Ramsay Steak

Vegas has a new contender for "Best Mac and Cheese."

Starters include butter-poached Maine lobster, fried oysters and smoked beef tartare with Guinness-infused mustard seeds. Entrees include a wide selection of grilled items, such as Wagyu beef, various cuts of dry-aged steaks, veal, a Kurobuta double pork chop and seafood choices. See? We take notes sometimes.

The meat at Gordon Ramsay Steak is aged 28 days in a “Himalayan sea salt environment,” whatever that might actually be. The restaurant is so proud of its meat, cuts are actually displayed throughout the dining area on a trolley. We’re not entirely sure how to feel about the meat trolley, personally, but the steak aficionados seemed to love it.

Let’s just say that if you don’t love the Wagyu American Kobe filet, you’ve lost your marbles. (See what we did there? Because steaks have marbling. So, it’s a pun. And puns are hilarious.)

Gordon Ramsay Steak

Fancy beef ain't cheap, but you get what you pay for, baby. Sheer succulence.

A server mentioned Chef Ramsay’s favorite cut of meat is the “rib cap.” In case you’re ever asked that on a game show someday.

The desserts are plentiful, too, of course. Every meal in Sin City requires a happy ending.

Gordon Ramsay Steak tropical

That crispy thing on the Tropical Coconut Panna Cotta dessert is called a "sugar tuile." We always wondered about that.

Make sure to take advantage of discounted prices for Total Rewards loyalty club members.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo: The Paris

You just never know what discovery’s around the next corner when you’re in Las Vegas.

For today’s random photo, we ambled around to the north side of Paris Las Vegas and were reminded what an impressive building it is.

Paris Las Vegas

It's like being in Europe, but in Las Vegas, you get ice in your drinks.

The eye-popping exterior of Paris Las Vegas is reminiscent of the Louvre. At least that’s what we read on the Internet. And as you’re aware, everything on the Internet is 100% factual.

We’re adding “Architecture” to our list of “Free Las Vegas Shows.” Yes, we understand buildings aren’t technically “shows.” But this blog doesn’t live by society’s rules, and we can make whatever lists we want. We’re rebellious like that.

Today’s Thing We Wish We Had Our Mouth On

Here’s a little something to perk up your salivary glands.

It’s the Raspberry Napoleon at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas.

Eiffel Tower Restaurant dessert

So many things for your tongue to fall in love with.

One of this blog’s favorite people, Eiffel Tower Restaurant manager Lyle Tolhurst, says this scrumptious dessert is served with “blancmange,” which is not as we first suspected, thankfully, a canine skin condition.

Rather, it’s a sweet dessert made with milk or cream and sugar thickened with gelatin, cornstarch or Irish moss. This definition of blancmange is much more appealing than we originally thought, even if there’s the possibility of moss being involved. Read more.

Bonus Eiffel Tower Restaurant fact: As if the Eiffel Tower Restaurant weren’t already romantic enough, it now does weddings. Couples can say “I do” while enjoying what is possibly the best view of the Las Vegas Strip ever. Here’s a .pdf thingy with more information about weddings at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant.

Tell Lyle we sent you, but feel free to not mention our blancmange joke, thanks.

Today’s Thing We Wish We Had Our Mouth On

They’re like a swift kick to the groin. But, you know, in a good way.

The Bloody Marys at Mon Ami Gabi restaurant at Paris Las Vegas are infamously fabulous.

Mon Ami Gabi Bloody Mary

If you haven't tried one, you might be doing Vegas wrong.

Mon Ami Gabi is so serious about Bloody Marys, in fact, they even have the only Bloody Mary Bar we know of on the Las Vegas Strip.

Mon Ami Gabi Bloody Mary Bar

Told you they're serious.

Mon Ami Gabi, by the way, translates as “My friend talks a lot.” Or, alternatively, we just made that up. We are a Las Vegas blog, not a Francophile. Whatever that might be.

Great drinks, photogenic food and some of the best people-watching in town.

What’s not to love about Mon Ami Gabi at Paris?

Vegas Hook-Up: 2-for-1 Tickets to Empire Comedy

If you’re a fan of Foursquare app check-ins, you’re about to get even fannier. Which is not, technically, a real word, but that’s never stopped us before.

Now, when you check in at Napoleon’s Lounge at Paris Las Vegas, you’ll get 2-for-1 VIP tickets to Empire Comedy, featuring some of the hottest comedians on the circuit.

No, we do not know what a “circuit” is, but we thought it sounded cool.

Napoleon's at Paris

Useless Napoleon fact: His wife Josephine's real name was Rose. Napoleon didn't like it, so he renamed her Josephine and she just went along with it.

Remember, getting 2-for-1 VIP tickets is like putting $60 right back into your pocket. Or, better yet, into a slot machine. Hey, this blog has bills to pay.

Among the comedic luminaries coming up (May 10, 2012) is one of our favorites, Rob Riggle, who first make us chortle on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Read more.

Rob Riggle

Fact: When you're born with a name like Rob Riggle, you don't have the option to not be a comedian.

See who else is scheduled to appear at Empire Comedy, because this blog certainly does not have the time to “click” or “research” or “exert effort on your behalf.”

Bonus: Your Empire Comedy ticket stub also gets you into Chateau Nightclub, if you’re into that kind of thing.

The Best $2 We Ever Spent in Las Vegas

Say what you will about Las Vegas buskers, those enterprising individuals (often in costume) who pose for photos for tips on the Strip and downtown, but at times their services are worth every penny.

We bumped into Skylor and Ruby outside Paris Las Vegas, and for a mere $2 tip, we got to take a photo of showgirls!

Las Vegas showgirls

How many times have you seen showgirls posing for photos on the street in your hometown? We'll wait.

This is not an easy gig! Those shoes are not built for extended periods of standing and posing, believe us.

Of course, an even more challenging gig is that of real showgirls like the ones in Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas. Performing in a classic Vegas show takes months of auditions, rehearsals and a superhuman ability to stay poised while: 1) wearing a 30-pound costume, 2) walking down a flight of stairs (without looking down), 3) being topless.

Read more about what it is to be an authentic Vegas showgirl.

We tend to appreciate showgirls in all their various shapes, sizes and degrees of toplessness. We’re a Las Veagas blog. It’s our job.

Paris Vegas Arch Gets Gordon Ramsay Treatment

The two-thirds scale Arc de Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas has a new look.

The much-photographed arch is now draped in larger-than-life, semitransparent banners touting celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s soon-to-open restaurant at Paris, Gordon Ramsay Steak.

Gordon Ramsay Paris Las Vegas

As if Gordon Ramsay weren't imposing enough, even without being 70 feet tall.

Click here to see a larger image.

Gordon Ramsay Steak is slated to open May 11, 2012 in the space formerly occupied by Les Artistes Steakhouse, adjacent to the casino’s high limit room.

This is the first restaurant Chef Ramsay, star of “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares,” has opened in Las Vegas. The two-story restaurant will boast a chef’s table, private dining rooms, a bar and lounge, and will seat 200 people.

This blog loves it some Vegas newness, especially when it involves saucy language (besides cooking, Chef Ramsay’s other area of expertise) and scrumptious food. Be sure to add Gordon Ramsay Steak to your list of “New Things to Do in Las Vegas.”

You are keeping a list, right?

Eiffel Tower’s Chef Joho Named Best in the U.S.

Gayot.com has named Chef Jean Joho, the culinary whiz behind the intoxicating Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, “2012 Best Restaurateur in the U.S.”

Chef Jean Joho

This blog loves Chef Joho. And he's French. Freaky, huh?

The widely-respected Gayot.com (pronounced guy-oh) says of the talented chef, “His ability to create, on the one hand, some of America’s most exquisite fine dining experiences and, on the other, more casual venues full of modern bustle and vitality, with equally inventive and superb cuisine, is why we praise Jean Joho.”

This blog would add, “Chef Joho is also responsible for a creme brûlée we’d sell our own sister to enjoy again.” But Gayot.com was pretty much on the money, too.

best creme brulee

Sorry, sis.

Gayot.com has a serious crush on the Eiffel Tower Restaurant, because it also listed the fine dining establishment among its “Top 10 Most Romantic Restaurants in the U.S.” Take a look. We personally know a happy couple who would tend to agree.

Reason #312 to love the Eiffel Tower Restaurant: They’ll even help you take better photos of your food to share on Facebook and Twitter. Read more. Oh, and the restaurant also happens to have one of the best views in Las Vegas.

Get all the details about Chef Joho’s exceptional honor at Gayot.com. He’ll be back in Las Vegas the week of April 24, so stop by and congratulate him in person.

It’s a Sign: Gordon Ramsay Steak Nears Completion

They have a saying in Las Vegas: “It ain’t a real thing until a sign goes up.” And whether or not we just made that up, it’s somewhat true, and the good news is Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant at Paris Las Vegas just got its sign.

Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas

Like the Luxor beam, but with, you know, steak.

The towering sign, jutting from behind the restaurant’s construction wall, went live a day or two ago, conveying a clear message, “This is where Gordon Ramsay Steak is going to be, so let the salivating begin!”

Details about the interior of the restaurant have been cloaked in secrecy, but we did catch a glimpse of an intriguing neon sculpture hanging from the ceiling inside. This blog loves it some neon!

Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas

Either it's a sculpture, or there's been some poltergeist activity inside the new Gordon Ramsay Steak. Probably that first thing.

We’ve heard a couple of dates being floated for the opening of the restaurant, including May 1, 2012. Construction is expected to be completed April 23. We’re champing at the bit to see what Chef Ramsay has in store for his first foray into Las Vegas dining.

About.com Confirms How Smart This Blog Is

We’ve always said comedy-magician Mac King’s show at Harrah’s Las Vegas is one of the best shows in Vegas, if not the best.

The 2012 About.com Reader’s Choice Awards have confirmed our assertion by naming it “Best Show in Las Vegas.”

Mac King Show Las Vegas

Mac King trivia: In college, he had a double major in Anthropology and Magic. Seriously.

The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, one of the best values in town at just $32.95, beat out shows costing hundreds of dollars more per ticket, and even prevailed over much-buzzed-about shows like “Absinthe” at Caesars Palace (which has also won its share of awards, too, by the way).

Mac King’s formula is simple: Specifically, keep it simple. The affable stage veteran puts on a charming, family-friendly, funny show that’s a crowd-pleaser, each and every time.

Mac King show Harrah's Las Vegas

No wonder it's always standing-room-only at Mac King's shows.

Congratulations to Mac King for nabbing this highly-coveted award. Oh, all right, we have no idea whether it’s coveted by anyone or not, but we still think it was worth a mention in this Las Vegas blog.

Catch Mac King at Harrah’s (you can even meet him in the lobby after his show), and find all the About.com Readers Choice Award winners, including Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at Paris Vegas for “Best Nightclub in Las Vegas,” on the official site.

Spring Hath Officially Sprang in Sin City

It might not feel like the seasons have changed in your part of the world quite yet, but spring has definitely sprunged in Las Vegas.

Spring flower

It's possible this flower is of the xanthorhizus variety, because anything is possible, even though it's highly unlikely.

After suffering through months of frigid weather (winter temperatures occasionally dipped below 65 degrees), Sin City is ready to embrace the season of renewal (Vegas spa treatment, anyone?) and rebirth.

spring flowers

It's possible these flowers are not native to Las Vegas, desertwise.

Warm weather means pool season is upon us, and Vegas visitors are already snatching up pool packages at some of the Strip’s best pool-errific (not a real word) resorts.

spring flowers

No Georgia O'Keeffes were harmed during the taking of this photograph.

As always, the change in seasons has been reflected in the new spring display at the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at the Bellagio.

Bellagio Conservatory

Somebody's got a green thumb. They would not be this blog.

The gardens are one of the most popular free things to do in Las Vegas, and are just a short stroll from Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Paris Las Vegas and Bally’s.

spring flowers

It's getting spring all up in here, up in here.

The Conservatory’s spring display features a 26-foot windmill, a colorful, revolving carousel and more than 8,200 flowers, several of which are featured in this blog post. The seasonal display will be up until May 13. A new addition this year: Live music from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Bellagio bridge

It's just like being in a charming Dutch village, but without the uncomfortable wooden shoes.

Please enjoy more eye-massaging springy goodness in our exclusive photo gallery.

Curtain Rises for “Jersey Boys” at Paris Vegas

The big moment has arrived. “Jersey Boys” is making its debut at Paris Las Vegas.

"Places!" Yes, actually, this blog did some musical theater in college.

We stopped by for a sneak peek at the show, and judging from the portions we saw, it’s clear why this lively musical romp has become the hit it is, both in Vegas (formerly at the Palazzo) and on Broadway (it originally opened in 2005).

Jersey Boys

Jeff Leibow had to pull a lot of strings to get the part of Nick Massi. See what we did there?

The only downside, if you consider it a downside, is that we can’t get those Four Seasons songs out of our head! Hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” aren’t going anywhere, trust us.

The guys were even nice enough to point us toward the bar.

“Jersey Boys” is a documentary-style musical based on the story of the meteoric rise of the Four Seasons. Even if you’re not a fan of the group’s music, we predict you will be after seeing “Jersey Boys.”

The stage at Paris is gorgeous, and serves as a colorful backdrop against which the talented cast brings the music of the Four Seasons to life. The show integrates large video screens to visually enhance the action onstage.

Jersey Boys Paris Las Vegas

A little Lichtenstein-inspired eye candy. Yes, we took an art class in college, too.

“Jersey Boys” is structured so that each of the Four Seasons group members narrates one of the show’s “seasons,” a unique way to hear four different perspectives about the accomplishments of one of the most popular bands of the 1960s. Kind of like “Rashomon,” but with better choreography.

A little “Jersey Boys” trivia: The Four Seasons named themselves after a bowling alley of the same name.

We snagged snippets of songs from the show (see below), and again, if you don’t want to be humming these tunes all day, you might want to skip this video altogether. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

“Jersey Boys” features Jeff Leibow, Deven May, Rob Marnell and Graham Fenton, who swaps out the role of Frankie Valli with Travis Cloer. Our sneak preview, and these photos, feature Cloer. You can see photos of the guys with Graham Fenton when they were welcomed to Paris Vegas. Learn more about the cast.

Jersey Boys

Their voices? Like butter.

Learn more about Jersey Boys, and find out why one critic called it “a big thumper of a show,” whatever that might actually mean. (Hint: It’s probably a good thing.)

Enjoy a few more photos of this crowd-pleasing new entertainment option at Paris Las Vegas.

“Jersey Boys” Get Warm Welcome at Paris Vegas

Dapper and affable, the cast of “Jersey Boys” attended a boisterous welcoming ceremony in their honor at Paris Las Vegas on Feb. 23, leading up to the opening of the hit show at Paris on March 6, 2012.

We bumped into the guys before their splashy welcome for some behind-the-scenes pics.

Jersey Boys

They dance. They sing. Bonus: They're funny as all get-out.

The “Jersey Boys” cast members are Jeff Leibow, Rob Marnell, Graham Fenton and Deven May. Keep track. There will be a quiz!

Here’s how we’ll remember: Jeff Leibow, darkest hair; Rob Marnell, tallest; Graham Fenton, plays Frankie Valli; Deven May, the wise-cracking one. Hey, we are a blog, not a mnemonic device expert.

Jersey Boys

This might help. Left to right: Jeff Leibow, Deven May, Rob Marnell and Graham Fenton. Now, how do we get us one of those snappy jackets?

Having met the cast of “Jersey Boys,” we already like the “Jersey Boys” stage spectacular, even though we have not personally seen it yet. We’re never wrong about such things, though. We are a professional Las Vegas blog.

Jersey Boys

Passers-by get a sneak preview of the show. Hint: It was awesome.

The cast drove into the valet area at Paris in a vintage 1959 red Cadillac convertible, and were greeted by Paris Las Vegas employees, many of whom were dancing in unison to “Oh, What a Night,” but we’re trying not to hold that against them.

Jersey Boys

Paris Vegas does it up right for its newest residents.

Regional President of Paris Las Vegas, David Hoenemeyer (below, center), was on-hand to greet the guys, and as a native of New Jersey, was named an honorary “Fifth Season.”

Jersey Boys

Ah, that's how you get one of those snappy jackets.

“Jersey Boys,” of course, is a musical about one of the most successful groups of the 1960s, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The show appeared at the Palazzo hotel until recently, and will now take up residence in Le Theatre Des Arts at Paris, the space formerly occupied by Barry Manilow.

Jersey Boys

Now, that is a great mnemonic device. "Jersey Boys" is opening at Paris Las Vegas!

“Jersey Boys” has been wildly popular, both on Broadway and in Las Vegas, and includes timeless hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “My Eyes Adored You” and others.
