Heartthrob Joey Lawrence to Star in Chippendales

Joey Lawrence, who first won hearts around the world in the ’90s TV hit, “Blossom,” is all grown up and ready to bring his talents to the Chippendales stage at Rio Las Vegas for a limited-time guest-hosting gig, June 7-24, 2012.

Joey Lawrence

Joey Lawrence should totally hang out with comedian George Wallace at Flamingo, because he, too, be thinkin'.

Lawrence is expected to sing, dance and host the popular male revue. Other recent guest hosts have included 98 Degrees singer Jeff Timmons and former “Bachelor” star, Jake Pavelka.

Joey Lawrence

Yes, that Joey Lawrence.

Lawrence currently appears in the ABC Family series “Melissa & Joey,” co-starring Melissa Joan Hart. He also starred on Broadway as Billy Flynn in the hit musical “Chicago” and a number of feature films.

Bonus Chippendales trivia: On May 31, 2012, Chippendales will celebrate its 4,000th pec-fueled show at Rio Las Vegas.

Here’s an exclusive Pulse of Vegas peek inside the bedlam that is the Chippendales experience.

Mac King Hosts Kentucky Derby Party for Magic Royalty

Harrah’s Las Vegas comedy-magician Mac King has a thing for the Kentucky Derby. Each year, he hosts a party leading up to the race, and a who’s-who of Las Vegas magicians and other entertainers show up in droves. Except for the ones wearing pants. They show up in pants. And in honor of the Kentucky Derby, some also show up in hats. Or in the case of Mac King, pants and a hat. Thankfully.

Mac King

We do not fully understand Mac King's Kentucky Derby obsession, but this blog doesn't judge.

Also in attendance were Penn Jillette, the taller half of Penn & Teller at Rio Las Vegas, who was recently booted prematurely from “The Celebrity Apprentice,” and fellow comedy-magician The Amazing Johnathan, who seemed a lot less freaky in person than he does in his show at The Harmon Theatre at Planet Hollywood.

Penn Jillette Amazing Johnathan

Relax, Teller, this was not a job interview. Probably.

Next up, our pal, Paul Vigil. He does a mind-blowing free show inside King Ink at the Mirage on Wednesday nights. And did we mention how free it is? Find out more.

Paul Vigil

Whenever we shake hands with Paul Vigil, we count our fingers afterward. Just saying.

The photographically-less-cooperative Lance Burton (below) was also on-hand for the festivities. Among his many talents, we learned Lance Burton is an amazing pool player.

Lance Burton

Yeah, we probably won't be invited back. The things this blog does for you.

The party guests weren’t all magicians, of course.

Mac King Kentucky Derby party

Some of this blog's favorite guests were mint juleps, official hooch of the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby, by the way, is billed as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” As opposed to sex with this blog, billed simply as “the most exciting two minutes.” Oh, how we crack ourselves up. And speaking of cracking up…

Also in the house (literally, since the party was in Mac King’s house) was Vinnie Favorito, longtime headliner at Flamingo Las Vegas. Learn more about his hilarious, off-the-cuff show.

Vinnie Favorito

Don't make Vinnie Favorito angry. His tongue doubles as a fencing sword.

Popular Las Vegas singer Clint Holmes also came to play. Holmes used to headline at Harrah’s Las Vegas, and you can visit his official site to see his current performance schedule.

Clint Holmes

Clint Holmes fact: He's the son of a jazz musician and an opera singer.

Naturally, there were also colorful hats galore.

Kentucky Derby

Our personal favorite. If you're into that kind of thing.

The winner of the Kentucky Derby on May 5, 2012: I’ll Have Another. Yes, that was the horse: I’ll Have Another.

Which, coincidentally, we heard coming out of our mouth a lot as the mint juleps were being passed around. Hey, we wanted to get into the spirit of the event. The things this blog does for you.

“Surf, The Musical” To Pop Up at Planet Hollywood

We’re brushing up on our surfing lingo, because a new stage production, “Surf, The Musical,” featuring the music of The Beach Boys, is coming to Planet Hollywood starting July 11, 2012.

“Pop up,” by the way, is when a surfer goes from lying on their board to standing as they catch a wave. Please try and keep up!

Surf the Musical

We suspect there will be bikinis. If you're into that kind of thing.

The new show at Planet Hollywood will feature not only Beach Boys music, but a slew of no-doubt-buff dancers and singers who will “tell a carefree story of good vibrations set in the nostalgic, happy times of the 1960s Southern California beach community.”

Beach Boys songs in the show will include classic hits like “California Girls,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “I Get Around,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and others.

The show is directed by the Tony-nominated Kristin Hanggi, whose most recent success includes the hit show, “Rock of Ages,” which featured another memorable musical era, that of the 1980s.

Hanggi has pulled together a who’s-who of Broadway’s top backstage talents for “Surf,” including set designer Beowulf Boritt (“The Scottsboro Boys”), lighting designer Howell Binkley (“Jersey Boys”), costume designer Gregory Gale (“The Wedding Singer”), Grammy Award-winning music producer Frank Filipetti and Music Director Ed Hamilton (“Priscilla Queen of the Desert”). At least one of those shows this blog has seen, “Jersey Boys,” because it’s at Paris Las Vegas at the moment. Learn more.

The show’s choreography will come from R.J. Durell and Nick Florez, whose credits include Katy Perry’s “California Girls” World Tour and Madonna’s “Confessions” Tour.

Surf the Musical

The company making boards for the Planet Hollywood production, ChubbySurf.com, has also made boards for The Beach Boys.

So, this blog is waxing down its surfboards, and we can’t wait for June. (A series of preview performances of “Surf, The Musical” will begin the week of June 11, leading up to the official premiere, July 17. See what we did there?)

Bonus Beach Boys connection to Las Vegas: The Barry Manilow tune, “I Write the Songs,” was written by Bruce Johnston, a member of the Beach Boys. Manilow recently ended a nearly two-year residency at Paris Las Vegas. The aforementioned “Jersey Boys” currently perform in the same theater Barry Manilow did. Ah, the circularity of the universe.

Speaking of the Beach Boys, they’re scheduled to perform in Las Vegas on May 27, 2012 at Red Rock Casino, about 20 minutes from the Strip. Find out more.

The Beach Boys

Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks. This blog doesn't know which is which. We are a Las Vegas blog, not a Beach Boys expert.

“Surf, The Musical” will do its thing nightly (dark Thursdays), with show times at 7:00 p.m., except Saturdays at 5:30 p.m., with additional 4:30 p.m. performances on Sundays and 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Got that? We’ll wait. Tickets are priced at $158.40, $114.40, $92.40 and $70.40, and you can get them at the Planet Hollywood Showroom Box Office or at Ticketmaster.

Find “Surf, The Musical” on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news, and visit the show’s official site for more information.

Take Some Drag Queens for a Spin at Imperial Palace

Given the popularity of reality TV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the recent opening of Drink & Drag in downtown Las Vegas and the ongoing success of “Frank Marino’s Diva’s Las Vegas” at Imperial Palace, this just may end up “The Year of the Drag Queen.”

How cool is it to be a female impersonator at the moment? Frank Marino’s divas even have their own big wheel at Imperial Palace.

Diva's Las Vegas wheel

Win, and your friends will "condragulate" you. Yes, this blog is up on its drag queen jargon.

When drag queens are involved, fun is pretty much guaranteed, even with the knowledge casino big wheel games have some hefty house edges. Seriously, though, are you in Vegas to do math or have a blast? We thought so.

Each of the divas is highlighted on the table, too.

Diva's Las Vegas felt

The IP felt it was time to put the divas in the spotlight. Felt. See what we did there?

Here’s more about Frank Marino’s Diva’s Las Vegas at Imperial Palace.

You better work. Or something.

Cee Lo Green Announces Something We Don’t Recall

Cee Lo Green, singer of one of this blog’s favorite songs of all time, “F**k You” (but without the asterisks), took part in a news conference at Caesars Palace today (Apr. 27, 2012) where something was announced. Probably.

Cee Lo Green

Charisma, Cee Lo's got.

We think it had something to do with the Billboard Music Awards, but honestly, we were distracted by the “Jubilee!” showgirls from Bally’s Las Vegas.

Cee Lo Green showgirls

See? Not our fault.

We kind of remember a mention of the fact Cee Lo Green will perform at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards. The star-studded ceremony will take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 20, for broadcast on ABC.

Green kind of stole the show when he appeared in 2011.

During the whole news conference, we couldn’t seem to get “F**k You” out of our head. Which certainly doesn’t help, remembering-wise.

Cee Lo Green

We do have a vague memory of Green working the crowd a little.

We’re fairly sure Green mentioned something about his upcoming residency at Planet Hollywood. He must have said something about that.

Cee Lo Green showgirl

News conferences can be draining. They can also lead to serious HR violations.

We don’t recall him saying he’s on “The Voice,” but he is. He might have mentioned his gig at 1OAK (“One of a Kind”) nightclub at the Mirage (Apr. 27), but we don’t think so.

Again, we blame the showgirls.

Jubilee showgirl

Would you rather we have taken notes or this photograph? Exactly.

The former mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman, also kind of distracted us at the news conference, mainly because he was drinking a martini at 10:00 a.m. It’s kind of his thing.

Oscar Goodman

We love the guy. We can't help it.

Anyway, that’ll have to suffice for now.

Find out more about the Billboard Music Awards on the official site, and mark your calendar for Cee Lo Green’s stint at Planet Hollywood starting Aug. 29, 2012.

“X Burlesque” Celebrates 10th Year on the Strip

The fetching cast of Flamingo’s X Burlesque show celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the saucy show in Las Vegas with a party at Pure inside Caesars Palace on April 24, 2012.

X Burlesque

This is how people in Las Vegas nightclubs look. Exactly like this. Every single one. All the time. We swear.

Thanks to Al Powers for the pic.

This anniversary marks the topless revue’s fifth year at Flamingo Las Vegas. It began its Vegas run at the Aladdin, now called Planet Hollywood.

When “X Burlesque” opened in 2002, it was called just “X.” Producers felt a clearer name was needed after several unfortunate incidents involving pirates looking for buried treasure. (We may have made that last part up.)

X Burlesque

Yes, we forced ourselves to see this show. For research purposes. The things we do for you.

Among the props used during the show’s fantasy sequences: Bathtubs, guitars, lollipops and feather boas. So, yeah, pretty much a typical night in Vegas.

X Burlesque

Just click on this photo to view the topless version. Really. That's totally possible. Just keep clicking. We'll wait.

Read more about the history of “X Burlesque” at the Las Vegas Sun, or if you’re like this Las Vegas blog, and not a fan of “reading,” just look at our exclusive photo gallery we’ve been dying to find an excuse to share again.

Las Vegas Keeps Step With “Dancing With the Stars”

There’s definitely been one degree of separation between Las Vegas and the TV juggernaut “Dancing With the Stars” lately.

On the April 23, 2012 episode, Imperial Palace headliners Human Nature joined the popular show for a Motown-themed blow-out.

Human Nature

Yes, this blog takes photos of its TV. Why, what do you do with your spare time?

The four freaky-talented members of Human Nature, Andrew Tierney, Toby Allen, Michael Tierney and Phil Burton, performed Motown-era hits throughout the show. They also took the opportunity to promote their new album, appropriately called, The Motown Album.

Human Nature DWTS

We want to get lighting like this for our cube at work.

Also featured in the Motown episode of “Dancing With the Stars” were music legends Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves and The Temptations.

Human Nature

But mostly Human Nature, because they have a Las Vegas show.

The “Dancing With the Stars” connection to Las Vegas doesn’t stop there, of course. “Dancing With the Stars: Live in Las Vegas” is in the middle of a 12-week run at the Tropicana. Read more.

Las Vegas is also home to a genuine “Dancing With the Stars” champion, Donny Osmond. Donny Osmond’s disco ball trophy is actually on display in the lobby of Flamingo Las Vegas. Yes, we took a photo. This blog rocks it like that.

Donny Osmond trophy

Las Vegas even has bling inside its bling.

Here’s some video of Donny Osmond just after he snagged his prize in Season 9.

Congrats to Human Nature for stepping it up and representing Las Vegas on “Dancing With the Stars.” Catch Human Nature live at Imperial Palace, in all their synchronized, harmonized glory.

“Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” Comes to Bally’s Las Vegas

“Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” the interactive dinner theater show, is making a move from the V Theater at The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood to Bally’s Las Vegas.

The show, which has been in Las Vegas since 2001, will open at Bally’s on June 1, 2012.

Tony n' Tina's Wedding

The wedding cake tradition comes from Roman times. Breaking a loaf of bread over a bride's head was believed to help with fertility. Seriously.

The last performance of “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” at the V Theater is May 26.

The always-unpredictable “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” will take up residence in the space formerly occupied by the Bally’s buffet, on the hotel’s second floor. (There’s still a buffet elsewhere at Bally’s, of course, the Sterling Brunch in the Bally’s Steakhouse.)

“Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” is unique in that unlike traditional theatrical productions, it doesn’t take place on a stage. The show provides a wacky spin on Italian weddings, from the ceremony to the reception, and performers mingle with audience members throughout the evening. Cast members have a lot of leeway to improvise, which means audiences never get the same show twice.

Paris cake topper

Only remotely related: We love this cake topper you can get next door at Paris Las Vegas.

The show includes a full Italian dinner, which makes the former Bally’s buffet space especially convenient, as there’s a kitchen adjoining the room. The performance space will now be called the “Tony and Tina Room” in honor of the show. The new “Tony and Tina Room” has a great view of the Strip, by the way.

“Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” which we’re fairly sure should have an apostrophe in front of the “n,” too, has played in more than 40 American cities during its run.

Some facts we found interesting: Since opening in its original Las Vegas home at Rio Las Vegas (Feb. 14, 2001), “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” has served up 2.9 million glasses of champagne and 450,000 pounds of spaghetti. No, we did not do the math. We prefer to just parrot what publicists say. It frees up a lot of our time.

Bally's Las Vegas

Thanks for giving us an excuse to share our awesome photo of Bally's Las Vegas again, Tony and/or Tina.

Brides and grooms may also want to note that couples who get married at any Caesars Entertainment hotel in Vegas get free admission to the show.

Now, that’s amore. Although we can’t be sure we used that word correctly. We are a Las Vegas blog, not an ethnologist.

We look forward to seeing this show again when it opens at Bally’s! We love us some Vegas newness. Oh, and wedding cake, of course.

Vegas Hook-Up: 2-for-1 Tickets to Empire Comedy

If you’re a fan of Foursquare app check-ins, you’re about to get even fannier. Which is not, technically, a real word, but that’s never stopped us before.

Now, when you check in at Napoleon’s Lounge at Paris Las Vegas, you’ll get 2-for-1 VIP tickets to Empire Comedy, featuring some of the hottest comedians on the circuit.

No, we do not know what a “circuit” is, but we thought it sounded cool.

Napoleon's at Paris

Useless Napoleon fact: His wife Josephine's real name was Rose. Napoleon didn't like it, so he renamed her Josephine and she just went along with it.

Remember, getting 2-for-1 VIP tickets is like putting $60 right back into your pocket. Or, better yet, into a slot machine. Hey, this blog has bills to pay.

Among the comedic luminaries coming up (May 10, 2012) is one of our favorites, Rob Riggle, who first make us chortle on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Read more.

Rob Riggle

Fact: When you're born with a name like Rob Riggle, you don't have the option to not be a comedian.

See who else is scheduled to appear at Empire Comedy, because this blog certainly does not have the time to “click” or “research” or “exert effort on your behalf.”

Bonus: Your Empire Comedy ticket stub also gets you into Chateau Nightclub, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Pete “Big Elvis” Vallee Moves from Bill’s to Harrah’s

A Vegas institution, Pete “Big Elvis” Vallee, who has performed for thousands of people at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon (formerly the Barbary Coast) for a decade has stunned his fans by announcing he’ll be moving to Harrah’s Las Vegas on May 3, 2012.

The final “Big Elvis” show at Bill’s will be May 1, 2012.

Big Elvis

Big news. Bigger talent.

The Elvis tribute artist made the surprise announcement on his Facebook page, stating, “A chapter comes to a conclusion at Bill’s Hotel and Casino. The Best $2 We Ever Spent in Las Vegas

Say what you will about Las Vegas buskers, those enterprising individuals (often in costume) who pose for photos for tips on the Strip and downtown, but at times their services are worth every penny.

We bumped into Skylor and Ruby outside Paris Las Vegas, and for a mere $2 tip, we got to take a photo of showgirls!

Las Vegas showgirls

How many times have you seen showgirls posing for photos on the street in your hometown? We'll wait.

This is not an easy gig! Those shoes are not built for extended periods of standing and posing, believe us.

Of course, an even more challenging gig is that of real showgirls like the ones in Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas. Performing in a classic Vegas show takes months of auditions, rehearsals and a superhuman ability to stay poised while: 1) wearing a 30-pound costume, 2) walking down a flight of stairs (without looking down), 3) being topless.

Read more about what it is to be an authentic Vegas showgirl.

We tend to appreciate showgirls in all their various shapes, sizes and degrees of toplessness. We’re a Las Veagas blog. It’s our job.

“American Idol” Champ Taylor Hicks Comes to Bally’s

Singer Taylor Hicks, winner of the fifth season of “American Idol,” will perform an eight-week engagement at Bally’s Las Vegas starting June 26, 2012.

Hicks announced his series of shows on “American Idol” when he commented to show host Ryan Seacrest, “I’ve got a great announcement. I’m going to be doing Vegas this summer. I’m really excited about it.”

Taylor Hicks Ryan Seacrest

Taylor Hicks shows Ryan Seacrest how he'll react when he sees himself on the digital sign outside Bally's Las Vegas. Probably.

Seacrest noted, “Taylor Hicks and Vegas, it’s meant to be.”

There’s a story behind Seacrest’s observation: Las Vegas is where Hicks’ “American Idol” journey began. The Birmingham, Alabama native was in New Orleans the night before Hurricane Katrina. When his flight was cancelled, he was given a free airplane voucher which Hicks used to travel to Las Vegas (hey, who wouldn’t?), where, by chance, “American Idol” auditions were being held. The rest is “American Idol” history.

Taylor Hicks

Those will be neon lights soon.

Taylor Hicks trivia: Back in 2006, People Magazine named Hicks “Hottest Bachelor of the Year.” Learn more about the popular singer on his official site.

Since his stint on “American Idol,” Hicks has performed with Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog, Gladys Knight and others, as well as being featured in “Grease” on Broadway and in the show’s national tour. Read more.

Hicks’ will share his unique take on southern soul, R & B and blues in the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $29.99 and $59.99 (for $59.99, guests will get to schmooze with Hicks after his show). Tickets go on sale May 15.

Welcome to Vegas, dude. Hey, they call people “dude” in Alabama sometimes.

“Peepshow” at Planet Hollywood Turns Three

“Peepshow,” the flesh-filled “striptease spectacular” at Planet Hollywood, celebrated its third anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip with some sort of peculiar cupcake “cocktails” and a photo op on April 16, 2012.

Peepshow anniversary

Bonus points for spotting the topless, photo bombing dude in the background.

The show’s featured performers, Holly Madison and Josh Strickland (also co-stars of the popular reality show, “Holly’s World”) were on hand to toast the show’s ongoing success. Joining them was the show’s creator, choreographer and director,  Jerry Mitchell (left, below).

Peepshow

It's called a Holly sandwich in the biz.

“Peepshow” made its debut on the Strip on April 18, 2009. At the time, the show starred former Spice Girl Mel B and Kelly Monaco. Mel B was later replaced by Aubrey O’Day, alleged singer and actress, currently stirring things up on “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Congrats to Holly Madison and the whole “Peepshow” team. And especially Holly Madison. From a completely objective perspective.

Holly Madison

Insert additional, gratuitous photo of Holly Madison here.

Thanks to Erik Kabik for the great photos.

Catch Peepshow at Planet Hollywood. Did we mention how flesh-filled it is?

Is There Anything Jaymes Vaughan Can’t Do?

His name is Jaymes Vaughan. He’s in the Chippendales male revue at Rio Las Vegas. But that’s kind of just the beginning.

Jaymes Vaughan

Don't say this blog never did anything for you.

You see, Jaymes Vaughan does it all. He’s the ultimate Renaissance Man, like Galileo Galilei, but shirtless.

Vaughan not only dances in Chippendales, he’s also the featured singer, and also does his thing in the Rio’s free stage extravaganza, Show in the Sky.

This blog has generously slapped together a snippet or two of his performances just so your eyes have something to do for the next few minutes, ladies.

From what we can tell, this guy has quite the charmed life. He was also named one of the “10 Sexiest People in Las Vegas.” See more.

Note: Quite a bit of the "Show in the Sky" doesn't actually take place in the sky.

Jaymes Vaughan definitely gets around. We bumped into him while doing emcee duties at an event at The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, and it turns out he’s also a gifted public speaker. Damn him.

Jaymes Vaughan

Jaymes is fairly dashing even when he's forced to wear a shirt.

Vaughan has also been on his fair share of magazine covers, so let’s add “print model” to his list of talents.

Jaymes Vaughan

This blog did a sit-up once.

You never know where he’ll turn up. We were browsing the saucy merchandise at the Go Sexy shop at Flamingo Las Vegas, you know, as blog research, and came across the costume below. Guess who?

Jaymes Vaughan

Subtext: Your boyfriend or husband will look exactly like Jaymes if you purchase this costume. Good luck with that.

Vaughan is also, apparently, a member of the armed services. Or at least pays homage to them with this Go Sexy item.

Jaymes Vaughan

Insert "landing strip" joke here.

He also has some colorful friends. Below, Vaughan hangs out with stars from Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas, the drag show at Imperial Palace, before one of his “Show in the Sky” performances at Rio.

Jaymes Vaughan

Yes, he just looks like that. All the time. If you're into that kind of thing.

Consider your beefcake quota for the week filled. Learn more about this multi-talented guy in the profile below with Vegas journalist Dayna Roselli.

See Jaymes Vaughan live in Chippendales at Rio Las Vegas, or just about anywhere, come to think of it.

It’s Penn’s World, We Just Live In It

Penn Jillette, the taller and more verbose half of Penn & Teller at Rio Las Vegas, has been everywhere lately.

Recently, he was inducted into the Nevada Entertainer/Artist Hall of Fame. He also started a new online talk show, Penn’s Sunday School.

In addition, he appears to be the frontrunner on “Celebrity Apprentice,” and he’s definitely keeping things lively. One of his more memorable quotes was even featured in “Entertainment Weekly” magazine (see below).

Penn sound bite

Zing!

You know you’re riding (yet another) wave of popularity when Steve Martin drops in to see your Vegas show.

Penn Teller Steve Martin

Some of this blog's favorite entertainers, ever. Thanks to Penn & Teller's people for the pic.

Root for Penn as he crushes the competition on Celebrity Apprentice, and see him in the flesh at his popular show at Rio Las Vegas, and there’s even a sweet room package with his name on it.
