Today’s Las Vegas Sign We Do Not Condone

As you may know, this blog’s not condoning something doesn’t mean we’re not going to share it.

This would be a case of that.

Binion's Las Vegas sign

This photo caption also does not condone this sign.

We stumbled upon this sign at Binion’s, in downtown Las Vegas, at the classic casino’s new Whiskey Liquor bar. And trust us, we use the word “stumbled” carefully.

Hear more from our friends at VegasChatter.com.

Binion’s, of course, is known around the world as the birthplace of the World Series of Poker, which now takes place each year at Rio Las Vegas, birthplace of cocktails that arrive twice as quickly because of iPad technology.

Keep it sassy, downtown!

Today’s Las Vegas Mystery: Michelangelo’s David

You know that replica of Michelangelo’s David in the Appian Way Shops at Caesars Palace?

Yes, that Michelangelo's David in the Appian Way Shops at Caesars Palace.

The dude has really big feet.

David statue

Huge.

We’re just saying.

Golden Gate Opens Petite High Limit Salon

There’s always something new in Las Vegas, and that includes downtown. The historic area north of The Strip has been bustling with activity in recent months, and we’re not just saying it’s bustling as an excuse to type the word “bust” a couple of times. Probably.

During our last visit to the Golden Gate, the oldest operating casino in Vegas, we noted they’ve recently opened a high limit salon. And it’s precious.

Golden Gate high limit area

Photos of the dancer-dealers is allowed, with their permission. Which we're 31% sure we were given. Hey, it's loud in there.

The “intimate” high limit room has two shoe blackjack tables and one double-deck game. We hear the room may add a baccarat table in the near future.

The room features plush, high-backed chairs, in case your feet get tired from all the, you know, sitting you’re doing while playing blackjack.

Golden Gate high limit

Comfy.

The new high limit room isn’t all that high limit when you compare it to The Strip, with two tables having a $25 minimum and another with $50.

The tables are manned, or rather, “personed,” by the casino’s popular go-go dealers. In fact, the only tables we saw personed by male dealers in the entire casino were at the craps tables. This blog does not generally have a problem with this trend, as long as the dancer-dealers know what the heck they’re doing.

Let us know if you spot anything new in downtown Las Vegas, and we’ll use it as an excuse to visit and snap some pics.

The Cocktail That’s Also a Vegas Attraction

There are a couple of things this blog highly recommends during a Las Vegas visit. The first involves chatting with an exotic dancer about how college is going.

This blog also recommends enjoying a cocktail at the elegant bar inside the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, and riding to the top of the Eiffel Tower for a view that will simply knock your g-string off.

You can now do those last two things we mentioned (you’re on your own with the exotic dancer), with a few bucks knocked off in the process.

Paris Las Vegas cocktail

You owe this blog so very, very much.

Here’s the deal. When you visit the Eiffel Tower Restaurant, order the “Top of the Tower” specialty cocktail. In addition to your cocktail, you’ll also get a ticket for a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower (usually $15.50). The cost for both is $28, which results in a $5.50 savings.

Oh, and did we mention how completely, mind-numbingly awesome this cocktail is? We do leave out important details from time to time. You’ll live.

Here’s the recipe if you’d foolishly like to try making this at home: Sky Vodka (2 oz.), Domaine de Canton (ginger liquor, 1/2 oz.), Ginger Beer (1/2 oz.), Sweet and Sour (1/4 oz.), grated Star Anise and a garnish of an orange slice, candied ginger and mint leaf. Trust us, it’s better when the Eiffel Tower Restaurant bartender makes it.

Top of the Tower cocktail

Don't you make us show another photo of this drink with a red menu as a background.

So, have a sip, then take a 46-story elevator ride to one of the best views in Vegas. Oh, and bring some additional sets of eyes to fully take in that heart-stopping view. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Celebrated Chefs Kick Off Vegas Uncork’d

Some of the culinary world’s most acclaimed chefs served up a bubbly photo op at Caesars Palace on May 10, 2012 to launch Vegas Uncork’d, an annual food and wine event in Sin City.

Could somebody whip us up a sammich? Thanks.

Chef Wolfgang Puck did the honors for the traditional “saber-off” (uncorking a symbolic bottle of champagne with, you know, a saber) at the famous fountains in front of Caesars Palace.

Vegas Uncork'd

It's all fun and games until a famous chef puts an eye out.

Many credit Wolfgang Puck with starting the fine dining restaurant revolution in Las Vegas, one which had led to Vegas becoming a mecca for celebrity chefs from around the world.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Puck’s Spago restaurant at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

Vegas Uncork'd

This blog credits Wolfgang Puck with "letting us get all up in his grill for a close-up."

Vegas Uncork’d was first held in 2007, bringing together culinary superstars for a “celebration of wine, food and spirits.”

Visit the official Vegas Uncork’d site for all the details.

Bobby Flay Vegas Uncork'd

Chef Bobby Flay currently has 124 shows on the Food Network. Roughly.

The launch event included appearances by so many big-time chefs, it was difficult to keep track of them all.

They included Bobby Flay (Mesa Grill at Caesars), Hubert Keller (Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay), “Nobu” Matsuhisa (below, Nobu Las Vegas) and Rick Moonen (RM Seafood, Mandalay Bay).

Nobu at Vegas Uncork'd

Chef "Nobu" Matsuhisa is about to get his own hotel and restaurant within Caesars Palace. It's complicated.

Because there were too many great chefs to fit into once sentence, here are more: Francois Payard (Payard Patisserie & Bistro at Caesars), Jean Joho (Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Vegas), Michel Richard (Central at Caesars Palace), Guy Savoy (Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars), Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Prime Steakhouse, Bellagio), Bradley Ogden (Bradley Ogden at Caesars) and many others.

Vegas Uncork'd

Vegas Uncork’d is presented by Bon Appetit magazine and the event is sponsored by the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace and the Cosmo.

Vegas Uncork'd

Wolfgang Puck's lucky there were no cameras present to record this mishap.

All-in-all, Vegas Uncork’d will feature about 50 world-class chefs, 60 restaurants and 30 events (through May 13). Don’t miss this rare opportunity to rub elbows with a pantheon of culinary greats. Only in Vegas, baby!

Here’s a virtual sample platter of exclusive photos from the Vegas Uncork’d kick-off event at Caesars Palace.

Free Imperial Palace Slot Tournament Is, Y’Know, Free

We can’t say it enough. This blog loves it some free Vegas stuff! The free Imperial Palace slot tournament, where you can win up to $1,500 in free slot play, definitely qualifies.

Here’s how it works. It’s complicated, so pay attention. Not the kind of attention you pay to your spouse. The real kind. You go to the Imperial Palace. You play a fake slot machine for five minutes. Top players of the day get prizes.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

Fact: $1,500 in free slot play is better than a shoulder massage from a Las Vegas showgirl. Actual results may vary.

The only caveat is one must be a Total Rewards loyalty club member to enter. It’s free to join, and heck, you can even sign up online from the comfort of your bath tub, French villa or cube farm.

The free Imperial Palace slot tournament moved recently, so you do actually have to pay attention this time: The slot tournament area is now on the third floor of the hotel’s Pagoda Tower, near the Race & Sports book and the theater Human Nature and Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas call home.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

Ain't no app for this! Winners are announced old-school.

If you’re unfamiliar with slot tournaments, entrants spend months training, often with highly-compensated coaches, building their endurance and perfecting their slot tournament strategies. We’re totally kidding. You sit and push a button. Over and over. It’s awesome because it’s all luck. No push-ups or memorizing some math-based strategy. Just have fun, already.

Imperial Palace slot tournament

The most exciting five minutes in Las Vegas that doesn't involved making love to this blog.

The free slot tournament at Imperial Palace is held Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Good luck, and if you win, this blog’s usual commission applies.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo

We love Vegas newness, but this blog also loves it some Vegas oldness.

Today’s random photo is a close-up of a classic slot machine.

class Las Vegas slot machine

This slot machine was so pretty, we were tempted to lick it. The feeling passed.

The colors. The textures. The history! Video screens are great, but sometimes, you just want to get your hands dirty.

This vintage slot machine is on display, along with other classics, at the Golden Gate in downtown Las Vegas. The Golden Gate is the oldest casino in Vegas. It opened in 1906.

The First Flash Mob This Blog Might Not Hate

Flash mobs as a social phenomenon may not be dead, but they’re definitely on life support, thankfully.

A flash mob planned on May 12, 2012 at The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood might just change this blog’s mind about these “spontaneous” outbursts of group performance, though. (See? Right there. Planned spontaneity. Just one of the things we don’t get about flash mobs.)

In honor of World Belly Dance Day (liking it already), a Las Vegas belly dance group, Fuego Fusion,  will perform a “shimmy mob” at 4:00 p.m. on May 12 outside the Planet Hollywood resort.

Belly dancing flash mob

Actual belly dancers may vary.

Belly dancing aside, the other reason we might not hate this flash mob is it will raise funds for The Shade Tree, a shelter for homeless and abused women and their children where this blog has personally volunteered on numerous occasions.

The “shimmy mob,” which we’re going to keep putting quotation marks around because we’re not sure we condone it, will also celebrate belly dance as an art form.

Other “shimmy mobs” will take place in 100 locations around the world on World Belly Dance Day. All the gatherings will raise donations for women’s and children’s shelters. Visit the official site.

Belly dancing flash mob

Life offers too few opportunities to both watch belly dancing and contribute to charity.

Here’s some video from last year’s event. Hint: It’s not that kind of belly dancing.

The event will last four minutes, as so many things in Las Vegas do, and will happen near the entrance to the Cabo Wabo Cantina.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo: The Paris

You just never know what discovery’s around the next corner when you’re in Las Vegas.

For today’s random photo, we ambled around to the north side of Paris Las Vegas and were reminded what an impressive building it is.

Paris Las Vegas

It's like being in Europe, but in Las Vegas, you get ice in your drinks.

The eye-popping exterior of Paris Las Vegas is reminiscent of the Louvre. At least that’s what we read on the Internet. And as you’re aware, everything on the Internet is 100% factual.

We’re adding “Architecture” to our list of “Free Las Vegas Shows.” Yes, we understand buildings aren’t technically “shows.” But this blog doesn’t live by society’s rules, and we can make whatever lists we want. We’re rebellious like that.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo: Trevi

Here’s today’s random photo of Las Vegas. Recognize this spot?

Forum Shops Trevi Restaurant statue

It's not a contest. The answer is below.

This shot was taken at the fountain next to Trevi restaurant in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

“Trevi,” by the way, means “three ways,” which seems oddly appropriate for Sin City, if you know what we’re saying. However, “Trevi” in this case refers to the fountain the restaurant was named after, which was built in Rome at the intersection of three streets.

The fountain outside Trevi restaurant isn’t a replica of the Trevi fountain, by the way. It’s the Fountain of the Gods. The Trevi fountain replica can be seen outside the Forum Shops on its east-facing, or Las Vegas Boulevard side (see below).

Trevi fountain Caesars Palace

If you can't find a statue to love at Caesars Palace, you've lost your marbles. Or, technically, marble.

What’s the best thing about Trevi restaurant according to this blog? The gelato stand right outside. Simply not optional during a Vegas visit. Trust us, your uvula will thank you. Or something.

Drink & Drag Vegas is Dressed Up and Ready to Party

Although Drink & Drag Las Vegas, billed as the “first-ever fully drag queen-staffed bar,” won’t officially open until May 5, 2012, the downtown establishment quietly began to welcome guests this weekend, and we were there.

Unfortunately, because it was just a “soft launch,” we were told we weren’t allowed to take photos. So, naturally, we took tons of photos! This blog does not live by society’s rules.

Drink & Drag downtown Las Vegas

"Drink" gets top billing, as it should in Las Vegas.

The staff of Drink & Drag, 24 full-time drag queens in all, were out in force, learning the ropes of their new gig and entertaining guests by breaking into choreographed dance sequences throughout the evening.

Drink & Drag drag queen

You better work! Oh, wait, you are working. Sorry!

Far from just appealing to the GLBT community, this blog witnessed guests of all orientations and ages taking part in the fun at Drink & Drag.

Adding to the draw are a 12-lane bowling alley and billiard room.

Drink & Drag Las Vegas

At Drink & Drag, it's a challenge to keep your mind out of the gutter.

The interior of Drink & Drag is gorgeous, with impressive attention to lighting and creating a sensory experience that leaves you feeling like there’s always something else to see in this 22,000-square-foot venue.

There are surprises around every corner.

Drink & Drag restroom

Oh, like we weren't going to share a photo of the saucy men's room.

Drink & Drag is tucked away on the second floor of Neonopolis, in the space formerly occupied by Jillian’s. And we don’t used the word “tucked” lightly. (Hint: It’s a drag queen thing.)

Drink & Drag

Outside, understated. Inside, over-the-top.

The Drink & Drag concept is brought to downtown by the owner of the popular Krave nightclub at The Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

Drink & Drag bartender

There's something for everyone at Drink & Drag.

Taking their cue from casinos like Rio Las Vegas, cocktail servers at Drink & Drag are equipped with iPads to transmit orders wirelessly to the bar, speeding up cocktail service and providing more time for the servers to interact with guests.

And an unforgettable interaction it is. To a person, the drag queens at Drink & Drag are friendly and hysterically funny, and know how to keep the party vibe going.

Drink & Drag

Shyness does not seem to afflict any of the Drink & Drag staff.

Insider tip: If you’re not quite up to speed on drag queen culture, we recommend you catch a few episodes of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on the Logo network. That way, you’ll have a better facility with drag queen lingo when you hit Drink & Drag: “beating your face” (applying makeup), “reading” (playfully insulting someone), “chicken cutlets” (bra inserts) and “fishy” (a drag queen who looks like a woman, not like a man dressed like a woman). Get more.

Drink & Drag

Being a dancing queen not your thing? Hit the swanky billiard room.

One of the most amazing parts of the Drink & Drag experience is enjoying the costumes of the staff. The outfits are stunning, and the make-up and hair can take upwards of three hours to get just right, according to one of our cocktail servers. To borrow a line from Frank Marino’s Diva’s Las Vegas drag show at Imperial Palace, “you won’t believe your eyes.”

This blog had a complete blast at Drink & Drag, and we are almost entirely heterosexual. We predict Drink & Drag will quickly become a must-visit part of the ever-growing downtown Las Vegas nightlife scene.

Drink & Drag bar

This is where the "drink" part of Drink & Drag tends to happen.

Today’s Random Las Vegas Photo

Las Vegas, you’re always doing something to make our eyes pop our of our head.

City Center Big Edge by Nancy Rubins

The technical term is "Puh-Pow!"

Click here for a closer look.

That sculpture in the foreground at Las Vegas’ City Center is a massive (57 feet wide and 75 feet long) piece of artwork called “Big Edge,” by Nancy Rubins, and is made of 200 canoes, rowboats and flat-bottomed boats.

The impressive “blooming flower” of boats symbolizes humanity’s quest for interconnectedness, our endless search for an emotional “dry dock” on a sea of uncertainty, or, far more likely, we just made all that up.

Check it out on your next visit to Las Vegas. But don’t blame this blog if your eyes pop out.

Pet-A-Palooza: A Great Excuse to Share Dog Photos

The 13th annual Pet-A-Palooza event, a festival dedicated to animals and their owners, will be held April 21, 2012 near the Las Vegas Strip at Star Nursery Fields at Sam Boyd Stadium.

This event provides this blog an excellent excuse to share dog photos.

Dog tongue

A face only a mother could pretend to love.

Pet-A-Palooza is hosted by Vegas radio station Mix 94.1, and Caesars Entertainment (them whose blog this is) is the event’s exclusive hotel-casino sponsor.

Sponsoring Pet-A-Palooza also happens to be an excellent excuse to let people know about all the pet-friendly Caesars Entertainment hotels in Las Vegas. (Just a coincidence, we’re sure.) Find out more about the PetStay program at Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Harrah’s, Bally’s, Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Rio. And check out our story about the first dog to check into a PetStay hotel.

Doggles

What is the matter with you people?

We would share photos of cats, but: 1) This blog is a dog person. 2) The PetStay program at Caesars Entertainment hotels is dogs-only at the moment. 3) Cats already get enough attention on the Internet.

Dogs playing poker

When was the last time you saw cats playing poker? Case closed.

Activities at Pet-A-Palooza include a Buff Dog Contest, Hairiest Dog Contest and Ugliest Dog Contest.

Live entertainment is also scheduled, including Megan & Liz, Graffiti6, Haley Reinhart, Matt Nathanson and Kris Allen, whose name we actually recognize because of the whole “American Idol” thing.

dog costume

We don't know how to feel about this.

Also on hand will be some DockDogs.

This blog loves it some DockDogs.

They bolt. They jump. They splash. The photo below might help.

DockDogs Las Vegas

DockDogs are cooler than regular dogs, literally and figuratively.

Additional awesome: Food and money collected at Pet-A-Palooza benefits more than 45 non-profit animal rescue groups.

Admission is $8, free for children three or younger. Bring a pet food donation and get $1 off the admission price. Parking costs $5 per car.
