Las Vegas Sign Changed to Reflect Popular Culture
In what many say is an ill-considered attempt to “stay relevant,” Las Vegas city officials have unveiled a revamped “Welcome” sign.
The sign, one of the most recognizable in the world, typically says “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas.” But in the wake of current events, the city decided it would capitalize on a term which has taken pop culture by storm in recent months.
"We're already trending on Twitter," said one official.
Reactions to the new sign have been mixed, with many expressing passionate disapproval about changing such an iconic symbol of Las Vegas.
“What an awful idea,” said one Las Vegas tourist confronted with the new sign. “Are they going to change the sign every time some actor loses it? They’re going to be updating it every 20 minutes.”
Another Sin City visitor commented, “Not only that, but they’re going to have to change all the refrigerator magnets.”
City officials disagree. “We can honor tradition while tipping our hat to the prevailing culture. In the case of ‘winning,’ it felt like a natural fit for Las Vegas. The people who don’t like the sign obviously don’t like winning. We can’t please everyone.”
The Las Vegas sign, located at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, has remained essentially unchanged since it was designed by Betty Willis in 1959.
When asked for comment, a representative of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said, “Yeah, it’s probably better if you leave us out of this.”
